How bad is the idle of the GM Hot Cam? Can it be run without computer mods?

I was getting ready to put the 04' Z06 cam in my 04' GTO as it is an easy swap (computer friendly) and available free but i alos have access to the "Hot Cam" and was wondering If one could get away with out mods to the computer?

No, you need a dyno tune or it will run like ****. With my hotcam, even with a mail order tune, it still ran like ****.

I ran mine for over a year on the stock programming. It made 381/373 on the stock programming as well. 6 speed cars will be more forgiving. Idle did bounce around from time to time, and it would surge and buck some.

you don't HAVE to have it tuned, but its better if you do.
i ran mine for 2 months with it untuned, it did surge sometimes, but ran well enough... with that said, its better to have it tuned.

Isn't the hot cam just a step above the ls6 cam. I installed the g5x4 cam in my 99 z28 and drove it a month not being tuned. I thought the computer handled it pretty well. I don't see why it would be a big deal to get the car dyno tuned with the hot cam. If you want absolutely every little hp out of the car I can see it being worth the money but if not, I would just have get a tune to suit the mods done to the car.

I was trying to go with something that would be easy to work with like no tunning or something that could be corrected with a hand held. I drive the car alot and do not want to mess with it too much. I intend to put a nitrous kit on it and was thinking a little cam can go a long way.

I just installed the hot cam in my 04 GTO. The car has stock heads and I'm using shortie headers with no cats. After a dyno tune the car made 30+hp and it moved my hp powerband up 1000rpm I have an M6 and drivability was no good without tuning, although I was able to deal with it for a few weeks before the tune. Idle was very lopy without the tune, actually sounded very cool. But the car would stall on hot and cold starts and I couldn't have that on a daily driver. After the tune the heavy lope at idle will turn into a mild lope and drivability went back to stock.

It will need to be tuned for sure. Mine would run without a tune, but was bad rich and fouled the plugs after about 600 miles.

i know a guy right now who is running this cam untuned...

so it is possible...so if u dont have the funds to go through with a tune right this minute u can wait for a lil while but dont expect to get the most out of it untuned

I ran a hotcam for 2 years without a tune. Sometimes it would dive towards stalling when braking to a stop and steering at the same time. It wasn't anything you couldn't handle by modulating the accel pedal. This was with a 6-spd. It's definately sweeter when tuned.
