Default Magazine Cam Install

So I've read the cam install procedure in the sticky where it requires one of the wooden dowl/pen magnet/special lifter tool methods which I was perfectly ok with until I read the following Hot Cam install done by a magazine: http://www.carcraft.com/howto/ls1_en...all/index.html

They claim you simply rotate the engine through at least two complete revolutions, and that the plastic valve-lifter guide captures the lifter when it pops up (from lobe lift) when there is no spring pressure load against it. This guide will hold the lifter in place so you can remove and replace the cam. Of course this is after the rockers are removed.

Anyone care to comment on what is the correct method?

Thanks,
Andy1

That method is fine, if you want to assume that it will work every time for all lifters.

Unless you are planning to pull the heads, I would rather be safe than sorry!

it can be done that way... theres also a chance of them falling down wit that method. the rods or magnets are used for extra precaution, as dropping one wouldnt be fun to deal with, it would involve alot of bs vrs. just taking alil extra precaution.

Agreed. It's nowhere near worth having to pull the heads, when you can spend $1 or $2 and be safe. It's no extra work.

and that $1 is including gas to get to the store! Well for me since mine's close... one 4 foot dowel was like 50 something cents at my local hardware store.

the LSx engine was "designed" so the cam could be changed without removing the head/intake. it might work good on a low mileage car. But i would either use the pen magnents or the rods to hold the lifters up.

The dowl rods might be the safest method. I have used magnets with no problem. My buddy also used magnets but one of the magnet heads stayed on the lifter when he pulled it out. If you use magnets just make sure they are well made.

Another vote here for the wooden dowels. I actually picked mine up from Wally World in the arts and crafts section. Best $1 I have ever spent!
