what color is the smoke? if it's oil it could be defective pcv system, bad valve seals, worn rings or cracked ringlands.
when does it do it and how often?

If a cylinder is burning coolant, the spark plug will usually provide an indication so you can locate the leak.

Not necessarily. If he is running straight water, it may not show up on any of the plugs. Trust me, I ran a little Isuzu pickup 30K miles with a warped head. I only used antifreeze in the wintertime (Texas) and changed my plugs every spring when i started running straight water again.

Yeah, sounds like a leaking head gasket. I wouldn't imagine it would be cracked, as the gasket is really the weak point. White smoke is not a good thing!
