when i did the cam swap i got one of those leverage type compressors from autozone and it was a bitch, thankfully it bent and i had to get a new one so when i went back i seen the over head jaw style and it worked much better and was only a couple more bucks.

Overhead jaw tool did not work for me. It just pulled the spring up off the seat instead of pushing the retainer down.

I made my own larry tool. Best spring compressor by far to use on the LSX engine and is cheap.

I'm partial to the crane tool. It works awesome and it compressess both the intake and exhaust at the same time.

I used one of those on my LT1, just lightly(small hammer wrench)tap on the top of it a time or two as it first starts to compress the spring. And the retainer will fall down off the locks and you can continue to compress it then. I think this style compressor was my favorite. I had to use a lever type one to put my dual springs on my current car though it wasn't bad but then again the motor was out of the car this time

I use the tim tool. It's basically the same as the larry tool. The tim valve spring compressor can be found in the tool section of this site. He has a long thread going there. I'm not sure about the larry tool.

Because of my first screwup, with the cam install, I ended up just taking the heads off and had got them, with bigger valves, and better springs, with a little port and polish to go along with it.
