Default Anyone Drill and Tap Rear Cover for Bigger Bolts?

I was installing the rear cover today and the threads in one of the holes in the bottom stipped out. They are the long skinny bolts that attach the oil pan to the rear cover. I'm not sure why it stripped out, I didn't even get to 9 ft/lbs before it started spinning freely. Would be be okay to drill and tap the rear cover for slighly larger bolts, such as 1/4". I would rather do this than buy a new cover, plus it would be fairly easy to do. I was just curious if anyone else has done this... Thanks!

I have never done it but I can't see why you couldn't. Another option would be an EZ thread if there is enough material around the original hole. I never really cared for heli coils. It's a steel threaded insert. Probably around $10 for a kit of about 3 or 4 inserts @ Fastenal. You will also need a proper sized drill bit and tap.

Good Luck

I like helicoils but they are a pain to do it right. Never tried EZ thread before. While in school I had a permatex guy come in and had some aluminum stuff that actually remade the aluminum threads. Is that what EZ thread is?

Well I tapped the holes to 1/4-20 and got some bolts. I got one bolt to 9 ft/lbs, and the other one broke off inside the cover before it got to 9 ft/lbs!!! These were brand new bolts and the ****** broke!!! I guess I'll just get a new cover

I'm sorry their called EZ lock here is a link

EZ Lock

Did you use grade 8's. Breaking @ 9lbs seems wierd. They are pretty long.

It's hard to tell from the torque spec sheet I have for sure but it looks like they are supposed to be torqued to 106 lb. in. Which would be just under 9 lb ft.
