cleaning engine... ATF for 5 min between oil change?
whats the deal with that?
i have heard on several different occasions from several different people that adding 1 qt of Synthetic ATF and running for 5 min
then do oil change as usual but let plug out & drain for an hour or so
the different cleaning agents will clean up the engine like no other and will have no negative effects... only doing this procedure on a rare occasion...
anyone else heard of this??

Modern ATF's don't have any more detergent or dispersant than regular motor oils. In most cases ATF will have considerable less of an additive package than a $.99 bottle of motor oil.
It probably will not hurt the engine unless it is run on straight ATF.
A vast waste of time IMO.

The only thing I would put into the engine before an oil change is motor flush or a petroleum based product like Seafoam.
I used Seafoam before my last oil change, motor ran fine with it in there, and it cleaned out the crankcase pretty nicely.

My brother did that in my dad's pontiac 4cyl when we were in high school and it colapsed a lifter, floated/hammered a valve, bent/broke a pushrod, and then scarred the rocker arm up. A few hundred dollars and skinned up knuckles later, we learn to never do that again.

atf is a detergent not a lubricant as much. to do the cleaning you have to mix 2 cups atf to a gallon of gas for fuel system. havent heard of putting a quart in the oil. they do have additives that do that instead of
