Question Cam Degreeing Questions

When degreeing a cam, is it ABSOLUTELY necessary to use an adjustable timing chain?

Only if the cam is off. If everything lines up right, then there is no need. There is a chance that the lobes will be where they are supposed to be. The adj chain set is only to move the cam if it is off.

I'm kind of lost here...Isn't the whole point of degreeing a cam is to make sure that it is installed on the ICL it was ground on(or to advance/retard as you see necessary)?

degreeing is checking the cam timing. Line up the dots and check. Find top dead center of the piston and then go through your steps. if its where its supposed to be you won't need a adjustable timing set . If its off then the adjustable timing set helps you correct it.

Is there a way to check the cam before you go to install it? It would be kinda nice to find out ahead of time.

Cam Doctor to check before hand. Adjustable gearset allows adjustment of VE's if the cam isn't exactly as spec'd. Also can be used to move peak power up or down in the power band. Advancing brings power down lower in the band, retarding moves it up, but you'll still want to check w/a degree wheel as you are also moving P2V clearences(IE valve timing events).

Too much =

How much will the power peak move if you advance the cam say 4 degrees from a straight up 110 degree grind?

I had a comp cam ground on 109 ICL a month ago. Installed and checked out exactly at 109!! Needless to say, I was very pleased. BTW I used a stock timing set with the better LS2 chain.

Is this a quality control problem with the cam mfg's? You would think that the DOT to DOT method should get you dead on the advertised ICL. If you need to "check" every cam when you install it (degreeing), then what good is putting the dot on there or better yet telling you a specific ICL? It just seems a bit fishy that everyone needs to go out and buy a $300+ degreeing setup plus adjustable timing chains and spend all that time when a MFG is supposed to put dots on the cams so we don't have to degree. I mean does GM (or anyone for that matter) degree EVERY engine they assemble? Hell no.

...and that is why some cars are faster than others. The stack up of tolerances can change things along with machining errors. By the way the cam I just installed was advanced 3 degrees more than advertised. So an adustable timing chain was necessary.

One more thing I installed a cam retarded 4 degrees going by the timing chain/sprockets and infact the timing chain was retarding it 8 degrees. So you need to check everything if you want to get the most power out of your car. You can roll the dice and everything may come out just fine. Then again you could be down on power from what you could have had. Your choice.
