Question Is Cam Indexing Mandatory?

I am installing an MTI heads and cam package - this will be my first time on a V8 engine - in my 2001 Corvette. I have been reading up on the cam install and am still a little fuzzy on the need to index the new cam. As long as you have the number 1 cylinder at top dead center and then line up the dots on the cam with the crank sprocket tooth I should be all set - yes?

Appreciate some feedbacak and thanks for your time.
