Default Ticking..Unplug #8 coilpack and ticking stops?

As title says.. I even switched #8 coilpack with #2 to rule out bad coil pack. It ticks then unplugging the coilpack at the wiring harness on #8 stops the tick? Replaced wires and switched around plugs. About 350 miles on this motor with no spray yet.

check the coil pack wiring harness for chaffing, wire may be grounding out causing an intermittent miss...you'll need to remove the coil pack assy to inspect it

Only the spark plug wire has sufficient voltage to jump to ground causing a "ticking" sound because of worn insulation. If you run the engine in a dark area while it is ticking you should be able to see the arc created when the spark for #8 takes a shorter path to ground bypassing the spark plug for #8. You would lose power when this happens as a result current taking the path of least resistance which in this case could be you old dried out spark plug wires. The exhaust leak and other suggestions don't seem likely if the ticking really does stop when you disconnect your coil pack.

Did you get the wire all the way back on. 2 clicks and its snapped on. Did you crack the porcelain on the plug itself? That will tick. Is it screwed all the way back in? Do you have an exhaust leak at the head on that cylinder? All are possibilities in your case.

I posted a question about it yesterday.... it was from crossed plug wires from the coil.

Default Noise

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but could it be a lower end issue? If you disable a cylinder and a noise like knocking or ticking goes away it could be excessive rod bearing clearance or like already stated a wrist pin issue. Hopefully it is not that serious. Try unplugging the injector for that cylinder while it is running and see if the noise goes away then. If it does it is not ignition related.

Before you get all excited about the hard stuff, idle
it in the dark and look for your little blue buddy. I had
a wire that was mis-seated and thought I had a new
top-end problem, the loose spark was so loud. These
motors have a hella ignition system really.

Sorry guys..Been very busy lately. It actually ended being a leak on #8 header gasket. It only leaked when that cylinder was firing. I believe someone mentioned that. At first I thought it was a rod bearing Not good.. But after some close mirror inspection and using the old heater hose trick I concluded that the gasket was the problem. Now just waiting for the new gasket and a day without a backache from working on this *****. Thanks again for all the responses guys!

glad you found the problem, and that it wasn't anything serious!
