Default hmmmm...i think i may have spun a rod bearing...help please:)

ok guys well i was driviing my car, and it always wanted to die out on me, i figured it was tuning due to the cam, and occaisionally i heard like a creaking sound....i thought it was a loose harmonic balancer...

well as of saturday night my oil pressure dropped drastically...like to 25psi at idle and then up from there during throttle...

i thought this was odd..it was a little low on oil, so i added some and then i drove home...it was still dieing out and stuff but i took it easy and let it sit til today...

today i fired it up, and cold oil presure was at 45 or so so i thought all was well...

but as it warmed up i started to get a knock, the car always wanted to die out..at idle and the oil pressure went back down to around 25 or so...

i was scared shitless it was knocking and te car wouldnt idle for **** so i could hear where the sound was coming from....i babied t home and just pulled the whole front end of the engine off and i am not really seeing anything wrong

the valves all look good and the front end looks good...

did i spin a bearing?

What is the best way to know, check?

Thanks

Louie

btw i havent really gotten on my car too much to start this i have been babying it a lot..

Do you have anything to cut the filter in half? Have you made any recent changes at all?

What advice can someone give that can't hear the sound or check out the car. Nothing to say except tear it down and see what is going on.

no recent changes at all...

and as far as advice just curious if things like
low oil pressure is related to a spun rod bearing, or a bad oil pump

if there is any way for a bad oil pump to cause this kind of noise...

etc...

or what about a lifter, wiill a lifter make a knocking type noise?

will a bearing that is on the brink start out with a someone squealing sound? what about an oil pump?

Thanks guys.

Sure... A spun bearing will usually cause a drop in pressure and knock. Some have zero pressure. A bad pump could cause a knock due to lack of lubrication of course. Lifters usually tap, but could sound like a knock if a few were collapsed. I was driving the **** out of a guys built 5.0 vert and collapsed all the lifters on one side of the motor. It knocked it's *** of, but still pulled hard.

hmmm here is teh newest info...on the bottome of the crank snout it looks a little gouged up...i dunno if that is from the harmonic balancer, or what...

filter looks fine, but i think there may be little shavings in the pan i am going to try to get a magnet in there...

i guess the only real thing to do is pull the engine, or replace teh pump and pray for good news when i put it all back together...

then if i get bad news..i pull and rebuild...

There was a soundclip of a car with spun bearing of here somewhere. Use search and look for spun bearing. Anyway my car sounded exactlly like the car on the sound clip and thats what my trouble was. A spun bearing.

You are going to have to take the crank out, so you might as well rebuild the whole motor because there are a lot of surfaces that need to be lubricated while running. In your case, you lost oil pressure and who knows how much damage was done to the crank, rod bearings, cam bearings, cam surface... It all needs to be spec'd out in order for this motor to last for another 100,00K miles...
