i don't have an fbody, but i have the TSP 228R with the stock GTO gears (3.46's), and my car is at least 200-300 heavier than yours. i have enough TQ down low to run 12.4's with a crappy 1.93 60'. i can cruise at 50mph in 6th gear with no bucking or surging, i drive the car 130 miles daily and i get 23mpg on average. i love this cam

I think stock gears with the 228R will work out just fine.

I have a cam with 228/230 and 3.42s. I have a tiny bit of surging in first gear but its hardly noticable. I can put it in 6th, cruise at 60 and I have no bucking/surging.

I run a 244/248 on stock 3.42's. Never said that it was fun/easy.

thanks guys for the replies, what will the car be like a little doggy off the start then like at 3k it will start pulling till you shift. How would it be when you keep it at like 4k and above? im trying to decide if i want to do my cam first or 12 bolt or 9in first. obvioulsly puttin in the cam would be cheaper which is good, but if its gonna suck to drive the car with 3:42's then ill just save more to get the rear? let me know what you guys think. thanks in advance..

i have a tsp 233/239 on a 112 with my 3.23s through an auto. i'm fine with mine, so you shouldn't worry with a smaller cam/m6.

I have had the 228R in my M6 Z with stock gears for about 2 years now. It would be nice to have 4.10 but the 3.42 have been working just fine after the tune. I do not use 6th until 65. I liked the cam as a daily driver.

My car has 3.42's and a cam that's close to a 228R. I can scoot around at low RPM without issue. It drives about the same as stock, until you get on it.

i really liked the 228r i had as well.i drove it around cam only for a while with stock 3.42s and the tq was plenty enough at low revs .then with heads,90/90 and 3.89 gears it was great, well if you like to spin tires all the time.regular street tires and 350 ftlbs @ 3000 will do that.

Personally I would get the rearend and supspension work done first! The power from the cam is not any good if you can't hook it. Back when I had my 10-bolt and zero supsension work, my car wouldn't hook for nothing. Best short time of a 1.89 spinning. Now that I have my 9" my car has made a drastic improvement. See times in sig. Good luck with whatever you decide!

i completly understand that with out the rear the cam is not as effictive TeEnAgE pHeNoM are those time in your sig with heads too? The thing is is that i can only spend this money once and trying to decide wich way to go first. out of the cams i either want the 228 or something similar to the f-13. i was wondering what our cars were like with a 228 size cam and stock gears to try to help me with my decision, my car makes 322 tq@3000 rpms now and some how for the most part from a 20mph or so roll it just hooks and spins sometimes a little bit, i know more power makes this worse. spending the money for the cam will put a big smile on my face i miss the sound my mustang had and the power will be awsome too, the rear end not as much. I know i need one someday, but all said and done $3000 is alot for a dumb *** rear end. All you guys with the stock gears are happy with how your cars run and peform? how do they pull say 4k and up? what rpm are you guys shifting at? thanks alot for the help...

If your not going FI in the future, upgrade to 3.73s, youll be amazed how the car performs with cam and gears. I went with 4.10s but my tranny is different than yours I think.

i know gears will make a big diffrence, honestly id like to put 4:10's in the 10 bolt. But after reading all the horror stories on here....... im to afraid to do it. if i spend the money about $800 and it breaks then that $800 i wasted for nothing, this will not be a forced induction car nor a weeked drag car id like to go to the track a few times a year and not worry about it to much...

i think you'll be fine with that cam i have a 232 238 in my z. It's only a little worse then stock. I got caught in a bad rainstorm yesterday and was stuck in slow traffic for an hour with no problems. Only a small hint of surging but not often and once i have the car above 1100 rpm its totally fine.

I understand! The cams are really fun. Mine pulls okay in first under 3000 because of the gears but after 3000, especially 4000 it really comes alive all the way to about 6900 on motor. My cam is a 228/236 588 lift on either a 112 or 114 LSA(can't remember off the top of my head). Any way you go you should be happy with your choice. Oh and BTW those times are w/heads. Keep in mind that that was my first time out ever on slicks and I am only 16 years old!

I love the gears I have....I loved the 4:10's even better.....you barely have to give it any gas when taking off in stop and go traffic.

I'm fine with 342's for the time being. I won't bother upgrading the stock rear end, but when I go for a 12 bolt or 9" I will switch to 373's, maybe 411's.
