Default Hot Rod article (camshaft question)

If you guys recall, there was an article in Hot Rod magazine (around 1 year ago) titled "LS1 cookbook", where they took a stock GMPP LS1 crate engine and got 530 hp out of it.

I have since lost the article, but I wrote down the part number of the camshaft they used. The number I have written down is the Comp Cams' XR289HR. However, I cannot find this cam, even if I Google it or check on Comp Cams' website. Just want to make sure I wrote this down correctly. Does the XR289HR even exist? Does anyone have the article to verify this for me?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you try the hotrodding web site, the tech article section usually archives the articles. I remember seeing something like this recently when I was on their web site, and there is a good article by David Vizard on there as well that is worth reading.

Yeah, I tried looking through the website's tech article archives, but I couldn't seem to find it. I figured surely someone on this site had that issue of Hot Rod and could maybe verify the part #'s for me.

These are the 2 Comp cams in the article:

1-xtreme rpm/ XR269HR/ Part# 54-414-11
2-xtreme xe-r/ XER281HR/ Part# 54-446-11

Hope that helps, if you need more info like, duration, lift. etc. Just let me know. I had cut that article out and had it on file.

I'd be interested in the cam specs. Could you post duration, lift and lsa?

...or just a scanned copy of the article would do just fine

Thanks for that info, Caribe! No wonder I couldn't find that cam; I guess I wrote down the number incorrectly. I am interested in the milder cam (the XR269HR). If I recall, they used Comp Cams' valvesprings, pushrods, 1.85 rocker arms, and retainers with this particular cam, right? Anything else I should get?

Also, this appears to be a very mild cam for the LS1. Do you guys think all of the upgraded valvetrain components they used are absolutely necessary?

I just got done reading that article and it seems as though they were testing different cams than the ones above.

Also, why in the world would someone writing an article about cams not tune the spark and fuel when switching cams out? That article was almost worthless since they coulnd't bump the rev limiter up or change fuel/spark for the bigger cams.

It would have been a great article if they reprogrammed the computer for each cam.

I was checking out that article just last night. I thought it was kind of a crappy article the whole way around. They installed stuff in kinda the wrong order and did not tune for any changes. Sorry, did'nt really contribute just thought it was a heck of a coincidence.

if i recall correctly they were dynoing the engine at above 400hp stock. So either they were advertising for someone or those are flywheel numbers which even seem high for that which other than the lsa, seems like a low-medium size cam for a 346

The article states is was 407 at the flywheel, which was achieved without all the factory emissions components, through headers, and using different ratings than GM's SAE standard. Also, the F-body LS1 does carry a 320 hp rating, but 350 is more like it. That's what the 'vette LS1 is anyway, and there isn't much different aside from vehicle specific intake and exhaust differences. 400 gross hp seems about right.

+1 on the lack of tuning for each cam in the article though. Good results, but could have been even better if at least the rev limit had been raised.

If your looking at that cam I say just step it up slightly and go with a thunder racing TR224 as its a proven performer. Also, the valvesprings are barely good enough for the stock cam so id say go with comp 918's and hardened pushrods at the least. You dont need new rockers nor lifters, just the stuff listed above and maybe some titanium retainers, but those arent a neccesity. You should also get an ls2 timing chain and a 25% underdrive pulley, have your stock TB ported, and if your not an 01-02 ls1 then get an ls6 intake manifold. Plus with any cam you should have headers and a catback.
