rocker arms or cam swap

rocker arms or cam swap
I have an 01 WS6 trans am.. So far I have an SLP lid, and I had a cat back installed with a dynomax bullet. I also tried using the hypertech programmer.. I had too much detonation with their program, so I went back to stock with it... I would like to know if buying a higher ration rocker arm setup, like the 1.85 from SLP is worth it, or to get a different cam. If I do go for a cam I want one a little bigger than stock, so I can keep my gas mileage. Any recommendations??? I would like to just bolt on something rather than doing the cam swap.. My car is a daily driver also. Any help is appreciated.

the rocker swap would deffinitely be the easier change, if your just looking for alil more out of your car and not much difference on the gas milage- i think it would be a good choice. not sure if the slp's are just bolt on and go, but if they are it should be a very simple task also would upgrade your spings and pushrods if your gonna add lift though.

Go with a cam. Go with at least a medium sized cam, if you go small you will likely wish you hadn't later on. My F13 still hits 30mpg on the highway. I would avoid the higher ratio rockers as they will make it difficult to install a cam later (clearance issues). There are a lot of good cams out there. Maybe something along the lines of the Futral F5 (224/228 .586/.581 112LSA) or the TSP 228 (228/228 .588/.588 112LSA). Just make sure you get all the supporting mods to go along with the cam (valve springs, pushrods, etc).

ROLLER ROCKERS on ls1's are a waste of time and money, plenty of people will tell you this. a cam is the better choice.
i got this info from a close friend who has a h/c ss. and another friend who builds ls1's for a living.

Yea, if you don't want to dive in for a cam swap, swapping the rockers is a great idea. In a Camaro magazine article, they installed higher-ratio rockers on mostly stock Vette and got a solid 20rwhp across the entire power band. Personally I'd rather spend a little more and get a mild cam for more power, but that's up to you. But either way you have to swap out the springs, so look at another 250-300 bucks for springs/retainers. I have a set of PRC dual-valvesprings with titanium retainers if you need a new set for a little cheaper. They are still in the box, never used. PM if interested.

A cam is a way more fun choice....nothing like the sound of a cammed car. However, the expenses will pile up quickly with a cam swap,....ask me how I know....lol. The good news is that you have a 01, so no need to fork out around 400 bucks for a LS6 intake or better. The bad news is that you apparenly only have a catback, and you should really have a set of good headers on the car if you're going to do a cam, otherwise, you're leaving a lot of hp on the floor. Coated headers will run you in the 400 to 600 range with Y pipe, Stainless....more like 1100 dollars, that's what mine cost me. If anything...if you're looking for power and want to just bolt on and don't swap cams, do the cheaper stuff first, like a ported throttle body together with headers. That ought to gain your around 35 rwhp (with tuning) which is more than rockers will ever give you.
The cam...while fun....is a big project and a big expense if you want to do it right.

with the set-up in my sig., I get 25mpg hwy and average 20 in town (providing I'm not playing with it )
My set-up can be had through a sponsor on here (VHP). However, I am getting ready to do a H/C swap .. PM me if you're interested in my set-up!

i say get a cam also. you will need better springs either way so you are just as well off getting a cam package, maybe something like a t2,f13,228r or similar are all great street cams.i honestly don't think IN THE REAL WORLD you will gain 20 rw with 1.85 ratio rockers.

Here is my dilemma. I'm not going to be doing a head/cam swap for a 5-6 months at least. Maybe more depending on how deployment goes. And I will be getting new vavletrain stuff anyway. So I want to max out the power I can get from bolt-ons.
I already have some ls6 valvesprings w/retainers and locks to use and from what I'm reading you can use your stock (7.400) pushrods but its reccomended to replace them.
So I would probably get the 7.400 chromoly ones.
So basically all I need are the rockers?
