Default Thunder Racing ported LS6 oil pump or Melling?

I currently have the Thunder Racing modified pump which is a LS6 pump that is ported and blueprinted. I'm not sure if I should reuse it on my new motor or opt for the Melling oil pump that they sell. I'm unsure when more volume and pressure is needed. I will be building a naturally aspirated 415 ci motor. So should I keep what I have, buy a Melling, or something else? Thanks.

pull it apart and inspect the gerotors for damage. There shouldnt be any, so you might as well reuse it, IMO.

Either oil pump isn't expensive. I may even consider buying a new ported LS6 pump if the Melling isn't a better way to go. I was just wondering when a higher volume/pressure pump is needed. Either way, its cheap insurance on a $10k motor.

The extra volume isn't a big deal, but the extra pressure that shimming a pump will bring you'll want. 10psi/1000rpm is about what you want to shoot for, but it certainly doesnt hurt anything to have over that up until about 90+.

The stock pump will do that.

So then why do we all change out the oil pump when we go into the motor?

I reused my stock pump on my first cam swap way back when. Then on my 2nd cam swap, I opted for the Thunder Racing ported LS6 pump. I am now building a brand new engine from scratch and figured why not upgrade the pump while I'm there. There isn't a big cost difference between a pored LS6 and the Melling, but is it worth doing?

Is there any difference between the 2 pumps or is just another company that ports a stock pump and slaps their name on it?
