Default longer crank bolt

Anyone know where I can get a longer crank bolt to use to get the crank pully back on? I've tried autozone, napa, advanced, ace hardware and napa with no luck

If you go to a local industrial bolt store you can get a piece of threaded rod and nuts. 3 feet of threaded rod, 4 nuts, and 2 washers cost me under $20. Spent a little time with a hacksaw, and now I have an installation tool, a piece that I use to push against, and enough left over to build another one.

You really don't want to "pull" the balancer on with a bolt. You really should "push" it on with a nut and piece of threaded rod. $20 for the tools to do it right is much cheaper than extracting a broken bolt and then getting your crank snout helicoiled.

I agree with Camaroholic. Especially when people have broken the bolt off inside trying to pull it on like that. I broke one myself too. Now I have a piece of threaded rod that I use to pull it on. Granted I had done at least 10-11 cam swaps before I had one break. But just one break was enough for me not to trust that method anymore.

Check out the tools section. There is amamber selling a tool he made. Looks like it's worth it to get one.

The ARP crank bolts are longer. Anyone know if they are long enough to get the pulley on?

618HAWK sells a tool that works quite well. I bought one from him, and I love it. I'm sure you could make one yourself, but he ships promptly, already has the stuff, and probably doesn't charge a whole lot more than it costs to make. Just send him a PM if you're interested.

I second the whole "do not pull the balancer back on". Even though it was an LT1, I stripped the threads inside the crankshaft trying to do this, ended up having to retap the threads and using the push method instead. Avoid the hassle.

I looked at about 10 different places for a longer bolt but couldn't find one anywhere. However, I did find a 1 meter piece of 16mm 2.0 pitch threaded rod and a couple of nuts and washers to match which worked very well to push the pulley back on. A local nut and bolt warehouse had the stuff.
