Default Oil (Slime) in Coolant

'98 SS 6M 85K milies having a bad day. I've owned since new. I've noticed my operating temperature increasing over the past several months. Short version, I checked the coolant level and noticed this off white slime on the coolant level dip stick. I removed the radiator cap and noticed slime floating on the top. I think it's 3 - 4 inched deep (slime). I opened the radiator petcock and clean pink coolant dripped out.

About a year ago the intake was removed so the knock senors could be replaced.

Where are the likely candidates for oil to get into the coolant?

Some people call that "milkshake", but not the kind you would drink.

Yeah, the oil layer will rise to the top, so when you open the petcock on the bottom of the radiator, you'll just get coolant.

On an LS1 I'm not quite sure what the likely culprits are. On LTX motors, people sometimes have issues with oil/coolant mixing in the head bolt holes due to the way the LT1 heads are set up. Of course, head gasket issues could cause this with either motor.

id do a complete reverse flush of the entire coolent system... put some fresh good coolent in, and see if it sludges up again, or if its the usual air + dexcool slime crap...

Even though SFSutton didn't specify, I just got the feeling that the car is DD and not raced, etc. That's why I was thinking more in terms of minor stuff, not major breakage. But yeah, a cracked block or head will do that too.

you could also do a leak down / pressure test of the coolant system.. the kit usually cost about 30 dollars at a auto parts store

Thanks for all the input. TWS guessed it, my gift to me for quitting smoking and the car I would have had when I was a kid, but fell in love first is my daily driver. Anyhow, it turns out that my problem is a ruptured cooling line for the power steering. It's power steering oil mixed in with the DEXCOOL and visa versa. What a mess. I'm glad my LS1 is in tack, I hate to have to replace it with an LS2....7!
