Default ARP crank bolt....what size wrench?

Hey guys, I'm trying to turn my motor over by hand but seeing as I have a C5 I'm unable to utilize a socket/ratchet with the steering rack in place.

I can however use a wrench, yet I'm unable to remember the 12 point size needed??

Any help is appreciated!

The actual head of the bolt is 27mm huh? I didn't realize it was that big...I thought is was in the 24mm area....

Is it possible for anyone with an F-body to check for me?

TIA!

Stock bolt is 24mm so it is probably the same.

A box wrench won't fit. I had to make one, I can send you a photo if you want, but basically I bought a socket, sliced it and welded it to a 1/8" flat bar. Then bent the bar to fit around the steering rack. Don't remember the size, but can check later.

with above, cut 1/4" off the backside of the socket. Get a 19" long piece of flatbar (I like 1/4" thick, 2" wide as its stronger). Then mark 8"on the flat bar and bend to a 45 degree angle. Mark 3" from there and bend in the opposite direction at a 45 degree angle also. Then weld the socket to the edge of one of the 8" long ends, grind edges for clearance and you've got a crank tool.

On the 45 degree angles you can go a little more for extra room.

1 1/16 and 27mm both work. Just used a box end 27mm for the engine I built. The box end has a slight angle on it that gives you enough contact to turn the engine over, but not for bolt removal/torque. Just curious as to what owning a f body has to do with it

I don't believe that the steering shaft is in the way on F-bods whereas the Vette has the steering rack about an inch away thus causing a problem for simply removing bolt or turning the engine over...

Thanks for the help guys!

Yup - C5-ers hace to yank the rack to get to the bolt (with a socket).

What about an offset head wrench? I used one on my car with the stock bolt. They're kind of s-shaped. However, I used a 15/16" one on my factory bolt.(same as 24mm)

The ARP bolt sticks out farther than the stock bolt so you can't get to it on a vette. You can turn the stock bolt with a wrench.

No worries guys...I pulled the fuel pump relay/fuse and turn the car over...

I had a good feeling that the setup had plenty of room and I was right...

Please do not use this method if you have any thoughts of it being close!

Thanks for the replies though....you guys are the best!
