Question 228R cam help

Well im stupid when it comes to internal stuff so please, bare with me. In the future id like to add a cam and maybe some ported LS6 heads. ultiamte goal for the car would be roughly 400rwhp, as long as I could go low low 12's or really high 11's.

So anyhow, I've started looking at cams just to see whats all out there and did some searching but didnt find much. Im currently intrested the 228R cam and would like to hear what yall think about it. I need to pass NC emissions, but if wont be possible with a cam then i'll just forget about it. IF I do end up getting it, i'd like to get the 112lsa for that wonderful choppy sound.

But overall i'd like to hear about the characteristics of the cam for a daily driver, and what all would be needed to go with it. I know i'd need the obvious like pushrods and such, but what about a stall conerter? (sometime I would like a YankSS3600 stall) I know i'll need tuning, but i have that area covered.

Well thanks to reading this novel and thanks for any help in advance.

**edit, here are the cam specs from texas speed
228/228 .588/.588
1600-6300 RPM Power Band
XER lobes (dont know if it matters)

I have the 228R cam. Its a good mid size cam. Gives about 8-10 RWHP more than the TR224, and doesnt have the issues of the larger cams 23x/23x. IF tuned correctly, it's not bad. I upgraded to the 228R after a couple years of the TR224. I didnt know that North Carolina had emmissions testing. I hope to be moving down that way in the next year. See sig for mods.

does the 228R require a stall converter or anything special? hows the driveability on a daily basis for it?

I've heard nothing but good about the TSP 228R, came pretty damn close to buying one myself.

you will probably need a stall with it.i'm sure around 1500-2000 it will be down on power some.i had the 228r on a 112 +2 and it was a great cam and with a spot on tune through cats you "should" skim by emissions,or hopefully anyways.

I've been researching the 228R for a few weeks and i most likely will buy it when i can afford it. Seems to be a very good cam for the street and makes good power. In the last two weeks there has been quite a few threads about the 228R so you can check those out too.

I havent done a whole terrible bunch of research on it other than the basics. what I like is the powerband, I wont ever take the car past 6k tops unless ive got totally upgraded valvetrain and supporting mods to take the abuse. so that 1600-6200 is just what i like, a cam that you dont have to spin to the moon to make power with

the 228R is a nice all around cam. it has very good street manners, i can be cruising around town at 50-55mph in 6th gear. i have some surging noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear between 1100-1300rm, is not really bad though. i went with a 112LSA, hp peaks at 6300rpm, working with my tuner to set the rev limiter at 7000rpm and set the onboard shift light at 6800rpm in every gear. (i'm running PRC dual springs, titanium retainers, chromoly pushsrods, etc, etc)
with traction and a stall, you should run 11's with this cam. i'm running 12.46 with a crappy 1.93 60', and my car weights 3725lbs without me
Good Luck.

I really like my 228. Be sure to have all the supporting bolt ons to get the most out of it. For an A4, a stall converter is a must-goto the automatic trans section and spend a week there. Then find local folks who actually have stalls and go for ride alongs. Emmissions, your tuner should be able to handle it for you.

I really like my Comp 228/230. It has like stock power on the bottom and when it hits 2500 rpm it will go like hell.

I have the 228R, it's fine...small for me. I have a 6sp and anything below 2500rpm and it doesn't feel any different than stock. the cam stops making power around 6200-6300 so set ur rev limiter to 6400 like I did. I have stage .5 LS6 heads, the cam, full exhaust, LS6 intake (01 SS) and made 405/376. I'm going to switch to a 232/595 114 cam soon.
