Default Use Z06 valves or not?

I have a set of truck heads to finish porting on, stock valves.
I also have a set of Z06 valves (came with a Z06 cam that
I later gave away). Light weight sounds good but I have seen
some commentary about the Z06 valves not being that stout
and the heads coming off.

Are these valves worth using on a sub-7KRPM motor, 224/224
.580-ish XE-R cam with Crane double springs? Reliability is #1.
I gather there is also some oddity about valvestem length and
maybe I should just forget about it, call it a loss and buy Manley
valves like everybody else? But it's money.

The hollow-stemmed sodium filled valves are a bit longer, to make up for the smaller base circle on the production cam. It's likely you could use a 7.400" PR with your aftermarket cam if the deck height on the heads is the same as an LS6.

I think it's fair to not worry about the reliability of these valves, there are tens of thousands of modded LS6's, and I've yet to read anything about a valve failure (not to say it hasn't happened).

i would run them if i had them. there are so many people running them and i have heard of very few failures. there just not worth $ to buy them most of the time for your average street machine.

I have also heard of one guy or two that has had an LS6 valve fail on them. Basically, the valve failed in tension which I believe was due to a high seat pressure caused by running double springs. I'm not sure if the ramp rate, lift or other factors played a role in the failure, but I wouldn't see why not. I would be comfortable using the LS6 valves with that cam you plan to run. I'm using them right now, but I'm running a TR224 cam with 918 springs.

The double springs are more than enough to keep those valves in line. Dual springs see 7200+ on some big lobes without any valve float. I dont really think youre going to gain much of anything with the light weight valves, but you do open yourself up for more failure potential.

EDIT: Dont forget to check to see if your cranes require shims. Ive seen this eat motors before.
