Hey guys,
What kind of heads would be the best for the money with the TR224? I would like to have stock tranny/rear longevity as much as possible, but run as quickly at the track as possible

I agree with above, but you could also look into a cnc ported 5.3 head. Thats the way I went. Keep the velocity up with smaller, but efficient runners, and increase the compression as well.

I am going with AFR 205 milled .024" with my 224 cam

I bought the AFR's and had them milled to 62cc and I love them. I have a full weight, nothing removed but spare tire car. 17" TT2's, 3.23 gears, bolt-ons, TR224 camshaft and AFR 205's, 90/90 auto. The car went 11.20@119 on motor and 10.60@128 on a 100 shot. race weight is 3650lbs. Buy the 90/90 with the heads, I picked up 6 tenths and 6 mph when I added that setup.

AFR's are probibly the best head out there, but they come at a price. If I was buying heads today, I would go AFR, but I bought my heads back when aftermarket was a vision, not a reality. But I would love to compare my 5.3's to a set of AFR's. I would bet my dollor they would put up a damn good fight. Just sad Jay from Absolute went in the wrong direction. His CNC heads are some of the best out there. I am just happy I got a set when they were available.

The 90/90 has had my attention, and after reading how it does with a headed/tr224cammed car, my mind has been made up. Just need the funds.

This is a money decision. If you have 2k to dump on heads then AFR, Edelbrock or Trickflows. If your on a budget then used 5.3's. If your gonna buy new budget then I would look at PRC ls6 heads and have them shaved to raise compression.

FWIW...i have the tr224 on 114 and I have 400hp/392 tq on a mustang dyno. I also still have the ls1 intake and a few other limiting things.

yeah I am looking to be 50 state legal meaning running shorty's and catted y and I hope to make in the 400 ballpark at the rear wheel

best bang for the buck has got to be the patriot ls6 w/ duals for a grand. How can you beat it. If youve got the cash you can step it up to some of the other suggestions. How much is every last HP worth to you?

I bought my Patriot 5.3's in 03 when there were only ported stock castings. I got them for $1195 new and they do a good job. If I had the $ and were buying new heads today, they would be AFR 205's hands down. I've had AFR heads on 3 previous small blocks in my boat and the power difference is obvious compared to guys that go cheap on Vortec's, Edelbrock's etc..

best bang for the buck would be the PRC ls6 heads. but I am leaning towards the TEA 5.3 1.5 heads they flow very well 320 on the intake side. many cars has went deep 10s with those heads, they r shipped for under 1500$.

try to give Brian at TEA a call. however, they r the supplier of couple of heads like the TFS, AFR..etc.
