Default cost for a swap

How much do you thing it would cost for a ls1 swap. it was raining real bad one day and it started to flood were i live and my trans am 2000 got water in the motor and it wont start at all i took it to a machinest who works on alot of engines and said that i need a new one and hes chargen me 5,000 bucks for a engine to put it in that he has that has around 20,000 miles and , hes also shaven my heads and port and polishing them and a new cam. and hes sencranizing my transmission so it will shift better. I was wondering does that sound about right money wise???

I would not spend $5,000 on a used motor. Sounds like he is already trying to screw you. You probably do not even need to get a new motor. It could be something electrical. Sounds really fishy (no pun intended) to me man.

i did the same thing about a month ago you should try to go through your insurance mine was covered and i got a check for $6000 they forund me a used engine that had only 18,000 miles on it. here is were i got lucky turns out the engine they found for me was an ls6. but like i said if you have full coverage on you car your insurance should cover it.

I never heard of an insurance company that would give you money back on a mechanical issue... Maybe I am missing something, and I am not here to bash but that sounds real iffy to me!!!!

I would say around $1500-$1800 hundred for the engine, $500-$800 for the swap, maybe $500 to port the heads, and $350 for the cam. I'm not sure about the trans, we get around $900 to fully rebuild one.

That come's to $4350 using the high #'s. Maybe he's selling you the engine for like $3000

did you already get the check? if not, take your car to GM and have them estimate putting a new one in (it will be insane) and they will probably total your car out. take your 15k check and buy your car back for 1500 then have someone like LG motorsports, Speed inc etc build you a motor
