Default Help me pick a cam for a 408

I've all ready done a search but I still need assistance. Here is the setup:

LME 408 shortblock
ETP LS7 heads (damn were these things expensive!)
LS7 intake
90MM throttle body
underdrive pulley
LT headers
Stock 3.23 gears in the 10 bolt (till it breaks at least)
Built 4L60E
TCI 3500 stall
NX 150 wet kit

Full suspension upgrades, oil pump, fuel pump, injectors, ect are also on the order. Now here is my dilema. The car is going to be 90% track and maybe 10% street. BUT......

My wife does occasionally like to take the car for joy ride in the summer. Maybe once a week she drives it to the beach or mall. So I can't have a cam that is all about bucking and surging. But on the other hand I don't want a "feels like stock" cam either. I want a cam she can tolerate but I can really appreciate.

Tough order to fill. I have been hearing a lot about this cam:

244/248 .612/615 113lsa

But how well does this drive around town at lower speeds and rpm's?

Or maybe I should be considering something smaller like a 235/240 or something like that?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Erik@HorsepowerEngineering.com is building a 408 for me. I spent a lot of time choosing a cam and I got the Comp XER 244/248 .612/.615 112+2. You might want to go a little bigger, depending on you goals, due to the heads you will be using. Email Erik and ask him.

I made over 500rwhp and 465ftlbs with that cam in my 402 through 3.90's and it is totally streetable, mine idles perfect with no surging unless it is cold and you are below 2K rpm. When it warms up though just keep it above 1500rpm and it is almost like stock.

If your building a 408 that is 90% track 10% street....if your wife cant handle a car that bucks and surges...espically ones thats a track car, I wouldnt trust her driving it to the beach, mall, moms house, whatever, whether it was to rescuse my *** or not, I'll walk! Im not tryin to be a smart *** all im sayin is if your building a car that goes 90 track 10 street, build it to run hard. obviously its not your daily driver , it midas well be your 100% track car, dont go on 3 hour trips to the mall, make it FAST! My opinion.

I hear what you're saying but you gotta understand a few things.

1). We live 5-10 minutes away from everything. 5 minutes from the mall, 10 minutes from the beach, 10 minutes from work, ect. None of the street driving will be distances over 10 miles other then the 30 minute drive to the track itself.

2). My wife loves muscle cars but isn't into racing them. We don't have enough room in our driveway for another car (4 cars and a boat as it we stand right now).

3). If I make it so she can never drive it then it'll just be a matter of time before a judge makes it so I can never drive it

I'm just trying to find that happy medium of decent performance while still be street friendly enough to not drive either of us crazy when we do take it for a ten minute drive to the beach. I can always replace the cam a few years down the road when we trade my wifes current car in on a new Camaro.

Thanks for the replies so far. Keep em coming!

if you made over 500rwhp would you like to give full details of the numbers, how about a dyno sheet and what specific numbers of a cam did you have. was it the 112+2 or etc?

WOW! that is a huge traditional split. That cam must absolutely love N20. I was considering something like a 235/240 112. But I just don't want to give up too much performance for streetability.

How does something in a 240/244 111-113 sound? Anyone else with a 408 please chime in and let me know how your cam does on the street.

I appreciate all the advice guys.
