Default Cam swap on an A4 question..

I was reading the install guide on a cam swap and read that you have to drop the starter and lock the flywheel to keep the engine from spinning. I just installed a set of headers on my car and would have to completely remove the passanger side header, along withe the x-pipe because its slips inside the collector. The starter sits right on top of the collector with not that much room to play with which is why im wondering if dropping the starting to lock the flywheel is such a critical step..

Basically you just need someway of securing the crank so you can remove the pulley bolt. I used a thick steel rod wedged in the pulley and against the ground to keep the crank from turning.
This is not the best way though

Pop the inspection cover on the bellhousing.. Wedge a crow bar between converter mount and the bellhousing.

OORR you could pull the spark plug and push about 3 feet of rope in hole just bu sure to leave some sticking out so you can pull it back out

I did mine with a 520lb. ft. impact. Didn't take but just a second and it was out.

Or you could by the Kentmoore LS1 specific tool that bolts in place of the starter and positively locks the flexplate from turning. Spendy, but well worth the price.
