Question Fly-Cut Stock Pistons or Buy New Ones? (What to fly-cut at?)

My pistons have to be fly-cut in order to work with my new heads. However, a person voiced that if you get shorter pistons, you can achieve a greater compression ratio. What's the deal here? Anyone heard of this? Fly-cutting would be my preference because it is cheaper, but how will this affect the pistons and my compression ratio? And do we need to do the "clay test" to find out where to fly-cut them at or will someone already know? (Heads will be AFR 205s)

You flycut where the valve is closest to the piston. That was at TDC for me, and everyone else I've talked to.

The exhaust valve is closest to the piston 8-10* BTDC and the intake valve is closest to the piston 8-10* ATDC. You can do a valve drop test at TDC but TDC is NOT closest to the piston.

We fully doctored the cam and did the calculations. I have a spreadsheet that we filled in with the info. TDC was where I needed to cut. It was a few degrees difference, but that made no significant difference as to where on the piston the valve would hit. So cut at TDC, just like every speed shop also says (LG, TSP, TEA).

Look at it like this. 200+ to have them flycut. Or 600 for new forged pistons and rings. 120 for new bearings. If not using nitrous just get them flycut. Just make sure you get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. LG quoted me 200 with the motor out of the car. Wish i had gone there.

Why should that matter? That's a total myth! I've searched and not found one single case of a piston failure due to flycutting, whether NA or with nitrous. Where did you see evidence that makes you think it would matter? Everyone else agrees the ringland is the part of the piston that nitrous will kill, not the center.
