Default Head and cam package

I'm thinking about getting heads and a cam for my car. I'm asking around trying to get others opinions. What is the best COMPLETE package that I can get for less than $1,500? I would like to get around 450 rwhp minimum if possible without an extremely radical cam. I'd like to be able to hear the lope, but not lose driveability. I'm not trying to build a race car, just something that will easily pound the hell out of any Mustang that likes to talk a lot. I've heard some good things about GMMP's L92 heads. Has anyone else heard of or had experiences with them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well since your car is not in your sig I have no idea what engine you are working with. If you have an LS2 vette or Gto then the L92 setup would be nice. But, if you have 5.7l Camaro or Vette or Gto you can forget about the L92 as it requires at least a 4.0 inch bore (ls1 is 3.898). The patriot or prc 5.3 and LS6 heads should be able to make close to that power with the appropriate cam on an LS1 and cost around 1500 total.

Edit: I see you added your car as I was typing haha. Well then the 5.3 or LS6 cnc heads I mentioned above would be a good choice with a mid ranged cam something like 228 to 234 on duration should get you the power you are looking for.

1500$ will not get you H/C fully operational unless you install all and tune yourself.
Gotta count $500 for tune, otherwise why bother.
You could get stock LS2 heads, MS4, tune and miscalleneous if you install yourself.
Still would be a 420>430 power pack.

Default I can help!

I'm getting ready to put a 402 in my 2000 FRC. I've got a set of LS6 heads that are cleaned up, a MTI R1 cam (232/236 .575 114), Comp R lifters and a LS6 intake with a ported throttle body. You can have it all for $1300. The heads, cam, & lifters were new about 1k miles ago. That leaves a little for gaskets. You will still need a tune.

I made 420 RWHP and 358 RWTQ and with the 4:10's the car was very driveable.

Patriot/PRC Stage 2.5 5.3 heads, $1200 including new high-lift valvesprings
Custom cam, $400
Pushrods, $70-150
LS7 lifters, $100
Gaskets and fluids, $100-125
LS6 oil pump, $60
LS2 timing chain, $35
Tune, $450-550

You don't need an LS6 intake as your car already has one.

Assuming you already have lid and exhaust upgrades, you can make some good power. That's around $2000 in parts plus $500 for the tune, but it should include everything you need to make the setup work correctly except for maybe injectors. If you want to buy stuff used, you can save a lot of money.

Buying some used, some new, I spent..
Ported 5.3 heads with a couple hundred miles on them, $800
Custom cam (Patrick G) from Thunder Racing, $410
7.350" Comp pushrods (second hand, not used), $60
Stock lifters (30k miles, this was right before the LS7's were available), $0
LS6 Oil pump (used, low mileage, just buy a new one), $40
LS2 timing chain (second hand, not used), $25
Tune, $420
Gaskets & fluids, $75

$1830. That's still higher than your price, but again, that includes everything you should be needing. Granted you may not find some prices as cheap, or you may find some parts cheaper, so your mileage may vary.

That setup put down 420rwhp and 400rwtq through Pacesetters/Magnaflow and a MTI lid/ported TB/LS6 intake in my 6spd.I hope to be close to 450rwhp this year after a few more things. Ran a 12.3@118 on a 2.0 60' leaving the line under 3k RPMs and breaking the bald Nittos loose at the top of 1st and occasionally 2nd. With the 3.73s, ET Streets, and FAST 90, I'm looking for solid mid 11s at 122+

I could have gone with a different cam for more HP, but I wanted drivability and low end torque (340rwtq@3000rpm). With this same cam, Patrick G is making 475rwhp/450rwtq, its a very good "baby" cam

Me and a couple of my friends that are much more mechanically inclined are going to install them. They've done 3-4 before, so I figured I'd save some money and we'd do it. As far as tuning goes, I wasn't including that in the price. I know there will be other costs included, so I can't do anything until I sell my '00 SS for the extra money.
