Timing Sets???
Trying to figure out the best one to go with on my head and cam swap. Which ones have you all used and which ones are recommended? Would like to stay <$150.00, like the idea of an infinately adjustable one like the cloyes, but also like the roller thrust bearing on ones like the rollmaster, but have not seen one with both. Also, is the Cloyes a single roller (I think it is)? Lastly, is there still a problem with having to machine the harmonic balancer when using a double roller (I will be installing a 10% underdrive Fluidamper with the install)?

Any other inputs? I am ordering some parts for another vehicle from one of the major nationwide performance parts places and could get the Cloyes from them and avoid the dreaded state sales tax and shipping charges I would incur if i order it with my cam and heads.

Rollmaster double rollers are great for an inexpensive double roller, no clearance issues at all and they come in adjustable, non adjustable...heat treated, non heat treated....standard bearing and torrington bearing configurations. We carry these and usually have them in stock!

The closest I could find was this replacement Torrington thrust bearing for a Cloyes timing set.
http://www.jegs.com/i/Cloyes/220/9-232/10002/-1
I have a Avon Progear timing set. It does not have the Torrington bearing. The OEM set does not have the bearing either. The way I heard it, the backside of the cam gear can rub against the cam retainer plate, causing wear to that plate. As wear increases, cam walk can occur. With the bearing sets, the bearing takes the wear but there is always contact. The cam retainer plate is cheaper to replace that the Torrington bearing. Easier to find too.

I broke a dual Rollmaster!
Do it right the first time.
Either a Cloyes 'hex a just' gear set with C5R extreme duty single chain, 'TSP' have,
or get the Hinson C7 chain. You will have piece of mind knowing that your timing gear is as good as it can get.
