Default 396 Cam Choice, Please Help

Which one of these would be most suitable

I would like this engine to have near stock idle 600 rpm

Street manors are the goal.

C5

396ci LS6 stock heads

A4, 2400 stall converter, 273 rear end, Mag 112 Blower,

4.125 stroke

6.125 rods

3.905 bore

10.5:1 CR

Headers and 3in center section.

Hi Flow Cats are installed.

These are in stock which is also important.

212/218 - .558/.563 w 1.7 rocker - 115 LSA - ComCam 424

224/230 - .581/.588 w 1.7 rocker - 114 LSA - CompCam 444

207/220 571/.578 w 1.7 rocker 118.5 CL - GT2-3

or

204/218 .555/.551 w 1.7 rocker 117.5 CL Keep the LS6 cam and save $400.

I'd go with the 224/230, but the driveability won't be "like stock". You'll know there is a cam in it. Second choice would be the GT2-3.

All of those cams are too small for a 396 cube engine. You need something like a 226/230 with XE-R lobes on a 115 LSA. Widening your LSA is what will give you stock like idle characteristics. You have to feed 50 more cubic inches than stock, so even though the cam has added duration, it's not going to idle or behave like it would in a stock 346 cube engine.

Actually decreasing valve overlap is what controls idle charecteristics, but widening LSA is a way to acieve that. Lowering duration is another way. The GT2-3 cam has -23.5* of overlap at .050" wearas the cam you listed has -2* at .050". There will be a pretty big diffrence in idle charecteristics between the 2. Everything about his combo screams low to midrange power, so the cam in question should do a good job with the blower. While he could make more power with a bigger cam, I don't think he is worried about "all out" performance.

im running a 224/236/116 in mine, and with tuning it has very stock drivability.
And thats on a stock 346. 396 will be even more mild. the gt2-3 is stock without tuning.

Correct, thanks for explaining that, you have confirmed what I'm hoping to achieve with the parts I already have. I just want a well mannered fire breathing, viper beating, C5 grocery getter.

222/228 ICL, blower cam Jim specd for a customer, worked well, so we used it again, never let us down.
