Default Determining Oil thickness??

Im trying to determine which oil I should try out...currently im running m1 5w 30 synthetic oil...and im having low oil pressure issues...so now i want to try a thicker oil...what should i go with???...i get confused on which number determines the oil thickness at high temps...so i guess thats my real question..

The oil you are running has nothing to do with lower oil pressure problems. GC 0w30 is like gold around here, they sell it at autozone. It's thicker then Mobil 1's 30 weight oil, closer to a 40 weight. The last # is the weight of the oil at operating temperature.

If you look up the Product Data Sheet (PDS) on various oils, you need to look at two at temperature viscosities. One is the visoosity at 212F/100C and the other is the HTHS viscosity which is the viscosity at 300F/150C. The first one will show you how thick an oil is at about normal hot operating temps. The HTHS shows you the viscosity when you have your oil really hot. Anyway, the 212F viscosity also dictates the 2nd number in the oils SAE weight rating. The "30" in 5w-30 indicates that it's 212F viscosity falls between just under 10cSt to just under 13 cSt. You will find that Mobil-1 falls on the thin side of the SAE 30 range. A popular oil called German Castrol falls on the high side of the same range. My advice is to read various PDS's and find an oil that runs around 12-14 cSt @ 212F.

IE 10W40 is described as a "40 weight oil" which is thicker the a 10W30. 5W30 and 10W30 are the same thickness at operating temp.

The W stands for Winter.
