Default Finally have my combo picked out, what do you think?

It's taken a lot of questions, calling of sponsors, thinking, thinking, and more thinking, but I've finally got down my plan for a budget heads/cam setup. Heads will be PRC 5.3's Stage 2.5, milled .010 for a 61 CC chamber, 2.02/1.57 valves. Using a .040 Cometic head gasket, compression should be right around 11.2:1 +/-. Cam is a custom comp grind, very similar to Patrick G's torque cam. 223/227@.050 .636/.639 lift but on a 111+0 LSA instead of 110. I will be installing it 2 degrees advanced. On top of that will be new LS7 lifters and TSP 7.400 pushrods. To top it all off, I will be adding an LS6 intake with home ported TB and a set of LTs/ORY. I will also be buying an LS6 oil pump and porting it myself. the only non budget item is going to be the timing chain, as I will have to buy an adjustable one in order to advance my cam. So, how does it sound? Power predictions? I'm thinking 420 at the wheels, myself.

Sounds good and you are probably close on the HP.

How did you calculate your compression ratio to be over 11:1? Not disagreeing with you but that seems awful high for 5.3L heads milled only 10 thousands. Will that cause any problems with knock? What springs are you going to run? Who's grinding your cam? Why are you using the new lifters?

I have been following your posts recently, I'm looking at the same combo, I think we have similar goals in mind....

If you use PianoProdigy's SCR/DCR calculator, it shows stock compression at 10.37:1. Most people, as a general rule, say LS1's are 10:1 compression. Going by his calculator, 61 CC chambers and a .032 compressed thickness gasket ( .040 compresses to about .032 ) gives me 11.73:1 compression. Knock off about .4 from that and I'm at 11.3:1 . I said 11.2 because that's more likely given the tolerances of most parts. Comp ground the cam, I bought it used from a member on here. I'm installing new lifters because stock lifters are prone to fail if they have higher mileage on them, like mine (140K). I'd rather not destroy my engine over a part that costs $120 to replace. I'm using PRC's dual springs, as they have said they were designed to handle LSK lobed cams and I trust that they know what they're talking about. I am still going to have them shim them to .050" of coil bind, per Patrick G's recommendations.

Piston To Valve clearance. It's a spec that should be measured any time you install a fairly aggressive cam.

Looks good, I know you have been searching for awhile. I think you should make some great low end torque. You going to get dyno tuned? I am interested in your hp/tq numbers.

I plan on tuning it myself with a tuning suite, but I have a chassis dyno I can rent for that purpose. I'd rather learn to tune myself anyway, because the nearest place I could trust to tune my car is 200 miles away. Not really interested in a 400 mile round trip plus gas just to get my car tuned.

My thoughts? Don't go with a 111 LSA with the M6 if you drive the car everyday. The lope will drive you nuts if you try to cruise under 2k rpms. (bucking bronco YEEE HAAAAW)

Mines a daily driver, and I'm really really glad I didn't go any more than a 114 lsa.

It's kinda an unusual cam grind. A bit out of the ordinary. Probably VERY torquey. And it'll sure sound mean.

That cam only has 4 degrees of overlap. Seems like it would have more, but the lobes are so aggressive that it's really not bad. Take a listen to the clips of Patrick G's cam in his torque cam thread - it's on a 110 LSA and you can barely tell it's got much of a lope to it. These cams are perfect for narrow LSA's

Ok, I thought I had it picked out, but I got screwed on my cam purchase. I'm just buying the whole setup from TSP. Cam will now be a 220/224@.050 .632/.636 lift, 108 + 0 LSA which was what my original design was. It should be a torque monster and still pull over 400 rwhp.

It will be interesting to see your results. I had seen some of your posts regarding the 220/224 108 cam.

sounds like it's going to be a stout setup. Can't wait to see some numbers

Definitely post up your results. I might go with the same setup. When do you think you'll get it all together and be able to post some feedback?
