Default Car is overheating?

The car drove fine all day... no problems at all.

I was on the hill and I did a little burnout and powershifted 2nd. The clutch didn't like it at all... anyway. The car drove to my friends house no problems at all. I let it idle at my friends house for about 15 minutes (I was walking around). When I got back in the car, the Temp Gauge was JUST ABOUT in the red. It wasn't red... but very close to it (Check gauges Light). I drove the car for 2-3 minutes and it started to drop. I turned the car off before it got back to normal operating temp or anything like that. Right now the car is relaxing and off... why would that happen? Think anything is severely wrong?

I did... but I didn't see anything. I'm gonna give a thorough look around once the car cools.

The car only heats when idling... once I start moving again the temp goes back down to normal. What you think that could be?

Could be a lot of things - are the fans coming on?

That's the first thing I'd check. If they aren't I'd start looking at a relay. If the fans are coming on....probably a thermostat.

I'd look at the fans and thermostat...

FYI I had that problem one time and the nut came off of one of the fans so I only had one fan.

This happened to me about a year and a half ago and I could not figure it out and two months later I swapped to a ls6 intake and found the temp sensor behind the intake was broken. I'm not sure if that was definitely my problem or if it is yours but its worth a shot.

How did you fix that?

The cars temp went right back down to normal temp once you started moving again? I mean it wasn't instant... but within 2-3 minutes it was back.

It also takes a good 10 minutes of idle to make this happen

A quick check with the car off.....spin the fans with your finger from underneath the car. One of mine as soon as I did it came off inside the housing. After that I ordered two new fan motors, because I figured if I was going that far in the tear down I might as well replace them. Its actually a left handed threaded nut....
