Dyno Results w/ Thunder 224 & GTP S2 Heads
We just got finished with a local customer's '98 SS installing GTP Stage 2 heads. He has had our Thunder 224 cam (112 lsa) for a while now, so it was interesting to see what the gain was when upgrading to the heads. We used 5.3L Truck heads in order to bump the compression slightly.
The car has been dynoed several times, so I'm including a couple of comparison graphs.
The original dyno was done with just bolt-on's (last summer) through the 10 bolt with 3.42 gears (323.9 RWHP, 342.9 RWTQ.) He now has a 12 bolt w/ 4.10 gears, stock driveshaft, steel flywheel, stock wheels, through an open Borla (no cutout, etc.) (yadda, yadda, ie: no dyno tricks.)
The "cam only" graph was made right before we did the install so the comparison would be as close as possible. (383.5 RWHP, 381.5 RWTQ). No changes were made to the car except for the heads and custom tuning (done in-house)
Dyno Bolt-on's vs Thunder Racing 224 Cam w/ GTP S2 Heads
Dyno w/ Thunder Racing 224 Cam (12 bolt) vs. Same setup w/ addition of GTP S2 Heads
WOW
On the very first shot the car pulled 435 rwhp. After tuning w/ the wide-band (LS1 Edit) the result was 443 RWHP, 421.3 RWTQ
Basically, that's a NET GAIN of 60 RWHP / 40 RQTQ over the HP w/ just our camshaft. It's a 120 RWHP / 79 RWTQ net gain over the bolt-on's only setup.
Mods on the car include:
- Thunder Racing 224/224 .561 / .561 112 lsa Camshaft
- GTP Stage 2 Heads/ Thunder Racing assembled w/ Comp 987 Double Springs & Comp 776 Titanium Retainers)
- Grotyohann long tube headers
- 3" Y-pipe
- Borla Cat-Back (opened)
- ASP Pulley
- Thunder Racing ported TB
- LS6 intake
- stock maf ends
- And, we changed the oil w/ Royal Purple after the cam change <--maybe that's the trick!!
Needless to say, we are pretty happy w/ the results as was both the customer & Craig @ GTP!
Track times to follow

Re: Dyno Results w/ Thunder 224 & GTP S2 Heads
If yall send me a "test set" of GTP heads I'll run my ARE heads car on the dyno, then swap the GTP's on and run them on the dyno for a comparison and post the graph. I'll keep em if they make more.
Come on..ya know ya wanna take me up on the offer. LOL.

KICK *** numbers! Congrats to all involved. 440+ is insane for a heads/cam car!
I think it was the Royal Purple oil that made the difference. LOL

Great Stuff, I can't wait for my Heads/Cam from the mighty Thunder Racing ( April 1st baby).
I would really like to see the track performance numbers.
Great job for all of those involved

Man those are some serious numbers! That is one amazing combo. Nice to see that the numbers are coming up across the board for all the sponsors. Soon we will be at 480 or 500 rwhp with some H&C setups. Good job and good luck.

Badass numbers Thunder! Just another FINE example of how you don't need a monster cam to make good power in these motors. I still like those cams between 221-224 intake duration.
Notice one thing in common with all of these higher than "normal" dyno figures coming out lately? LS1-EDIT
I expect the "normal" output values from all possible combinations will be jumping up a bit for the next few months, gotta love that!

That would be kick ***! I'd say it's possible, but your gonna need a bigger cam. Isn't there a TR227 or something? Perhaps that with the GTP3 heads, ported/polished holley intake and LS1 EDIT - maybe we can get close to 500rwhp. Thats nuts.

Point taken although LG Motorsports' G5 numbers are not LS1-Edit tuned.
