Pinging under slight loads?

Pinging under slight loads? My friend has a 2000 automatic LS1 WS6 (mostly stock besides boltons) and says that he has noticed a little bit of pinging during shifts and while driving.
The car has about 55k on the clock and isnt driven hard at all.

Does he have a chip ?? If he does and the chip is set for 93 octane he isnt running 93 oct. you would be getting spark knock... ie a pinging noise.
