Default Anyone running ASA Hotcam on stock shortblock?

Has anyone tried the ASA hotcam with stock heads? Its 226/236 with .525 lift i/e.. **Does anyone know if this cam will have sufficient piston/valve clearance without fly cutting pistons?** Anyone dyno with it? I also like the looks of the standard LS1 hotcam but I dont see many people running it...does it have issuses or what? TIA

There is a shop down here in Atlanta that builds heads/cam LS1's for the locals using their "special" and secret cam grinds, which are ASA specs. They are diehard ASA builders, and only run ASA spec cams in their cars unless the customer request otherwise. I have a couple of buddy's running around with ASA spec cams in their daily drivers, they make GREAT low-mid range TQ. They just finished one up that made 395 rwhp with stock heads. Another buddy of mine is running 120 mph N/A @ 3675 race weight with their heads/cam package.

Those cams have a pretty nasty lope from what I hear, but Damian is right. They do have a punch..

If the heads have been milled you need to check the piston to valve clearence. I had the opportunity to drive a GM built Camaro (6spd) on the 1999 Hot Rod Power Tour that had this cam in it -- sounded very nasty and it would definitly haul ***. An automatic will need gears and a convertor.

I was wondering how this cam would work in a 2002 with stock computer settings? I realize that you have to tune the computer for maximum horse power, but just how agressive is this cam? Also could you give me the name or e-mail address for the shop from Atlanta, I've been interested in this cam for months, and wondered how it would behave.

I run one in my car. I believe Damian is referring to me in my post. Cam has been great. The SS is my daily driver and I have about 25k on my heas/cam package. The guys are right, this cam hits a serious lick. I love it. It does seem to make qiute a bit of midrange torque. I have hit 119 cosistantly and hit 120.x a few times with a race weight of 3625 without me in the car. My heads are milled .045 and I do have flycut pistons FWIW.

Is this the one yall are talking about: 226/236 525/525 110lsa? Why is the exhaust so much higher than the intake? Also, I was wondering why the lift isn't as high as some of the other cams out there like the Thunder Racing cams. I wanted a cam with a mean lope to it and this sounds like it could be an option for me one day

Its not. Depends on your application weather its better or not. Stock heads just do not need super high lift... Why do you think the GM hotcam will spank a TR224 cam in a same setup car in a street race?

This means driver, helmet and all. So if you weigh 200 pounds you have a 3825 raceweight! Sweet Molasis--This is a f-body right?
Why is that thing so heavy--10 point Iron cage, iron block, and 20' rims?

How would the ASA cam do with stock heads? What would I need in addition to the cam and springs?

Just read all the post about the ASA cam. Ilike the strong low/mid torque idea. Wondering like others where info can be found. Maybe I missed it on one of the replies. Someone said they had H/C/I from RP Motorsports? How to get in touch with them? How much was the package? I have a stock 99 A4, and am planning coverter/gears so that won't be a prob. Anybody have a sound file of the idle? I'm old enough that I still like a llope in my cams I even put a comp cams 292h in mild 355 in my beater truck just for the lope Anyway thanks for any and all info.

Houston, we have a solution!

But, you may be happy with the regular Hot cam. It lopes like satan, and has good midrange torque for the street racer. I'm still not on this mega high lift bandwagon (though I like the MMS229). High lift=spring breakage. Bad for the daily driver that goes on road trips, like mine. I've narrowed my choices to the Hot cam and the Comp 218/224. I think the Comp is making more power, but the Hot cam makes a little less for a damn good price. But I need more info on the ASA hot cam.

Hey, the 0.525" is really not a whole lot of lift. GM had a Camaro on the Power Tour in 1999 that had this cam in it. I personally logged about 350-miles on this car and in total mileage I am sure that it had over 2000-miles for the entire trip. Trust me -- we drove it like a rental car and never had a problem with springs. This car had stock LS1 heads with what became the 2001 LS6 valve springs on those heads. FWIW, I am fairly certain that the 0.525" lift was rule a specification from ASA at that time.

Oh yea btw hehe =) I am not sure if people here realize it but you cant just "stick" in the 110 ASA hotcam in the ls1 and expect it to work.....

Think about:
VACUM
FUEL MANAGEMENT
ADVANCE
IDLE
TUNING
VALVETRAIN
