engine sounds like its clapping????

engine sounds like its clapping???? My car has 80,000 on it and about 10,000 miles ago my engine started making a clapping sound. Has anybody had this problem or heard of this?

You still drove 10,000 miles with this sound? How loud is it? Is the engine running rough, or like normal just with the clapping sound? Can you tell if the sound is coming from the top or the bottom of the motor?
