Default Is 700 too much for a Cam Swap

I went to a Machine shop today that quoted me 5800 for a complete rebuild. I asked how much to install the cam they quoted me 700 just for the labor, and told me it would take two days. Is 700 too much for labor?

For a shop that's probably about right. Try to find a member in your area who can do it for you....can probably get it done for less than $300.

Some shops charge $1200 or more for a H/C install so just a cam $700 sounds about right.

Internal engine work isnt cheap. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, I'd suggest to do it yourself and grab abuddy that has some knowhow of mechanics. It's really not that difficult and we're all on here to help you out for the "do it yourselfer"

Sure you will hit a few bumps but in the end, you'll have that 700 bucks in your pocket and will be experienced for the next time you want to do it.

sweet jesus, $700 is nuts for cam only. i had a shop install my cam, oil pump, timing chain, springs, bases, retainers, and pushrods for $250 bucks and they got it out the same day. car came out exactly like it did going in, no leaks and bone dry underneath. one year later same story and no issues. they did great work...

now, question is, does this $700 include a tune?

Apparently I need to move to Texas! $700 isn't nuts, it's unfortunately right on. A local shop did mine for $400, but everywhere else it's beteen 600-1000. Not to discourage a person from doing it themselves, but changing out a cam isn't the easiest thing on these cars, well on anything really. You've gotta drop the radiator and fans, pull the accessories off, etc. etc., then you've still got the valvetrain to hit! My mechanic is quite competant with F-bods, and it still took him about 6 hours.

That said, it's a reasonable amount to ask for, but not what you should settle for, keep looking.

That's actually about right.. Figure $80-$100/hr for labor. Flat rate on that charge seems to be about 7-8 hrs. H/C's are around 12 hrs flat rate.

most people on here will do it for less than that, and that includes all the sponsor quotes I have ever seen. Most are around $500. But If you have any idea what your doing its not hard at all. I did mine in 2 days, while putting a suspension lift on a dakota at the same time, and they weren't even full days of work.

$700 is plenty fair, especially if the springs need to be installed at a certain height (higher lift cams).
