Default How much power can the Ls1 block handle?

Just like the title says, how much power can the stock ls1 block safely handle? I'm going to be doing a forged 347 and I want to know what kind of power is being made on the ls1 block. Thanks in advance!

Same as all the other LSx blocks, if built right.

This doesn't includethe new GM LSX iron block, however.

It varies greatly depending on the application. I'd start worrying about the block above 1200hp.

Let's put it this way, you'll probably start lifting the heads before the block will break. What kind of plans do you have for this engine? Boost? Spray? NA?

It's just gonna be a forged 347 w/ a 250 shot. Plans are to make about 460-470rwhp on motor + the 250 wet. LME is going to assemble and do the machine work on the shortblock. Will the stock crank be ok w/ this kind of power? It will have eagle H beams and diamond flat tops w/ hellfire rings, and clevite bearings.

LME is good stuff, i got my ls6 last week with compstar rods, wiesco pistons, with ported oil pump, double roller, man it looks great. Plus they have really good customer service as well.

I would say you'll have a ticking time bomb with a stock crank....with that shot of spray. Could last a awhile, could break first shot. I think the stock crank is good to about 850-900, but pounding it with the massive torque from spray is another story. Save up for a forged crank.

Thanks for the input, just not sure if a forged crank is in the funds, I might take the shot down to a 200...lol. Basically my goal is high 9's on gas. Raceweight will be about 3150-3200 w/ me in the car. Gonna be a 6 spd car.

How about doing a progressively controlled shot at least so the crank doesn't take a complete beating? It would suck to lose a crank and then lose the entire engine.

Ahh, forgot to mention it will be on a progressive control. It will be a motor car first until I get it hooking and going straight on motor then I will move on to the nitrous. Looking for 10's on motor.

I'm no expert but a progressive controller will be easier on the crank. I think you'll be moving on to nitrous pretty quick as you'll get used to 470 RWHP pretty quick.

But still, saving for a couple months, or even 3, for a forged crank, might prove to be very wise. Than you can spray the pee-pee out of it.

I'm sure I will...lol. I just bought a roller. I haven't had an ls1 in about 3 years, back then I had a gtp headed 6 spd car w/ a 226/226 that put down 436/415, ran 11.6's on motor, things have come really far I feel like I'm learning all over again. I'm just glad I can do all the work on these cars, save me a ton on labor...lol.

I don't think you have anything to worry about on the stock crank. Harlan took the stock crank well into the 8's so that is a testament to the power it can take. And I guarantee you he made a hell of a lot more than 750 rwhp.

I have not seen, heard, or read about a stock crank failing in these motors. I'm sure it has happened a very very limited number of times, but GM got this crank right from the factory.

That is true, but I just wouldn't take a chance on loosing the entire engine when you can save a couple months for a forged crank. And wasn't Harlan turbo?

i wouldnt worry about the crank as what your wanting has been done and then some. I plan on doing a similar setup. Spray the 250 and let her rip. Dont be scared! spray the 250 and have a hell of a ride.

How do you get used to 470RWHP pretty quickly?! I think I'd be set for good with that kind of power lol.

I guess when you are just stepping up from 220 hp 305 TPI 85 Camaro, my 330rwhp feels like heaven.

I guess it just depends on the person. My ~500 RWHP is pathetic, old and seriously boring. I wanted more 1 month after I had the car done.

You have absolutely zero to worry about with a stock block and crank at that power level.

Nothing.

Thanks for the reassurance guys, I figured I was ok but it's nice to hear it being confirmed.
