So the motor hydrolocked. Gonna talk to the insurance company to see if they can do anything. Ive read a little on this but never knew anyone that has turned it into insurance but I guess alot of people have and I just didnt know it. How does it work? Can you take the car wherever you want to a shop? Does it have to be a dealer? Do they cut you a check or what?

It seems like every major storm we have my dad has a couple customers bringing their cars into his shop with this. Usually what happens is after my dad lets the customer know whats up with their car the customer will call their insurance company. The insurance company will send out an adjuster and if everything goes okay the adjuster will cut a check on the spot.

So yeah, you should be able to take it to whatever shop you want. No, it doesn't have to be a dealer.

i dont get how ppl can hydrolock an ls1 motor the intake is on top so u must have to drive through some pretty deep *** water

Ive worked on an LS1 for a guy once that was slam full of water in the oil. Luckily it didnt kill the motor. What happened was he went through a flooded part of the road and all the water entered the motor through the front cover where the crank pulley goes. Not sure how his happened though!

I've seen them pay a bunch of times.

We had one customer that hit something in the road and busted the oil pan. The customer didn't realize it in time and ended up running the motor with no oil. The insurance company ended up totalling the car because of it.

If it is legit, turn it in, you will be covered. Likely they will have the motor torn down & inspected & oil samples will be taken. (That is how we do it @ the company I adjust for.)

It's easy. Look at where the air is coming from, under the front bumper. There is a nice air-damn there that runs the width of the car, directing air up to the intake. Go through a puddle that's 4-6" deep and that front air damn will scoop up water and direct it to your intake. Hopefully the filter will stop most of it, but if not, even a little bit of water will grenade a motor since water won't compress, at least not enough to matter.

Now add in some type of cold air induction kit and it will be even worse.

how deep of water were you in? It is difficult to hydrolock these motors. getting water past the filter is not as easy as people think.

I think that it depends on the Company. I have Nationwide and my wife hydrolocked my Honda and it was covered. They pulled over a gallon and a half outta that 3.0 VTEC. The funny thing is that it was just over 8,000 for a new motor. HEHE Thank you WIFEY.

I have been through this before. During Hurricane Charlie I was in NC and decided I had to make a beer run before the storm hit fully. Pulled in to the gas station, took 3 minutes to buy beer, pulled back on to the same road I was just on but now there was 8" or 10" of water flooding the road that I couldn't see due the the rain so hard on my windshield. I had a cold air box that comes off the front spoiler and directs air, in this case water, into the bottom of the stock ram air box. It killed the engine and due to the exhaust tips being under water and the engine dieing causeing a reverse vacume, my motor filled with water. I didn't know what happened so I turned the key and the started ripped itself loose from the block. That is the explination the shop gave. I had only recently returned from a deployment so I only had "in storage" insurance on my car. Luckily since weather was included in that coverage the insurance company covered a motor swap , $8500 I think it was, all except for my $500 deductable. I kinda lucked out I feel. I had Progressive BTW. The insurance also covered water damage to the interior due to my carpet getting wet while I was pushing my car out of the road. Good luck!

Funny thing is, I live in Florida but had to go to NC to have a hurricane take out my car.

Hydrolocked mine and got 5,000. At first they wanted to put in a used engine

I just bought 408 shortblock and a used sts with it.

There was a guy here local that hydrolocked his motor and was able to get a 408 out of the deal. However, he hydrolocked by sticking the garden house down his intake.

weird how this hydro-lock thing works we had 4x4 tahoe in the shop with a hydro-locked motor and it threw a rod through the block. the truck had a slight lift kit on it. and the air box and motor was full of water from a storm. the insurance company paid for a used engine. i try to stay out of the rain

I have a buddy that hydro locked his motor in his Z28. Insurance paid for it, cant remember how much it ended up costing though. I, myself had an incident but got pretty lucky. Got caught in a bad storm on my way home and hit a small puddle and water definately got into the intake. Water must have gotten into the MAF sensor and what not. Almost died but didnt, started acting like it was only running on a couple cylinders. Ended coming out of it and it has been fine since.
