Default Cam Install A Suscess! A few questions?

Hey I just put in my new cam and springs today and start up was fine and shes running great, The only thing thats bugging me is that there is a slight ticking(almost a knock) at idle inside the passenger valve cover. Its not that loud just noticable when the hoods up. Cant even hear it really above Idle, Did I not tighten a rocker to spec or something??? any sugestions

ps. my oil pressure is just a little bit lower all around, normall?

Re-check the lifters, but lower oil PSI seems odd when upgrading to a ported LS6 pump? what is your oil PSI at idle?

With porting the oil pump you generally shim it to get the extra pressure.

Just porting it will obviously flow extra, which means less pressure.

No, it's a positive displacement pump. "Porting" it will not give more pressure OR will it give more flow. It will require less power to turn the pump. We are talking about a VERY small increase too.

You are correct in your statement of shimming the relief spring for more pressure. That's the only way to get more pressure out of a pump. I know I've personally posted a fair amount of information on this in the past. One could probably find this information searching under my user name.

Feel free to correct me if im wrong but I would still think going from a stock 99 pump to a LS6 it would be unusual to have a drop in oil PSI. I get damn close to 50PSI at idle running 0w-30 German Castrol.

That would be unusual for sure. A fresh pump with no wear and a new spring on the pressure side should make for more oil pressure w/o additional shimming.

If I shim the spring I'm preloading it in effect. The little piston is a relief or bypass used only in case of a malfunction of some sort in the oiling system that would cause a restriction or blockage. If the pressure were to increase to a value greater than that of the spring the piston would move in its' bore and open the relief window. Under normal circumstances this doesn't happen so shimming the spring doesn't increase the pressure or volume. It just increases the point at which the pressure gets bypassed back into the sump. Poor maintenance can cause pressure to go up over time, but with reduced volume as a side effect. The pump controls pressure and volume while the spring acts as a relief when there is a problem which hopefully isn't too often. Pumps don't have heart attacks like you do when your pressure gets too high. They just bypass the extra pressure back into their sump. You don't have a sump either. Too bad.
