Default O-ring or Piston slap?

How do you know if the O-ring is messed up or if it's piston slap? I have a friend that has been even more picky than I and he is hell-bent on saying his O-ring is messed up b/c 01-02's had that problem a lot from the factory (he says). Input? Any way to tell which it is?

If he's getting piston slap, he should only hear the noise.

If he's got massive oil consumption and/or blue smoke out the exhaust then he may need to be concerned about the rings.....

I mean the oil tube O-ring of GM TSB mention in the 00-02 cars causing oil aeration.

There is no oil consumption issue, just the tapping when the car is warming up. I told him its normal. I find it kinda odd though when I FIRST START! my car it is DEAD silent and about 15-20 seconds later it will tap until it has fully warmed up or I drive it. What gives? Thats kinda odd...but the O ring would get worse and worse as it warmed and be worst at full temp. I dunno...piston slap is wierd I guess? Maybe his is the same as mine? I dunno, havent asked. He is hell-bent on thinking the motor has a prbolem b/c it taps. I said yeah...its a pushrod motor (noisy as hell by nature) and its all aluminum...gonna make noise.
