Default Worth going with an LS6 cam

I want a cam to help my motor breath because I guess in my year (2001) they used a small cam. I was thinking about something small like a Z06 cam.

My questions are, is it worth it? What kind of gains should I expect?

Here is some more information so you guys can better educate me.

The car is a completly stck 01' Z with 2.73 gear. my future plans are 3.73 gear, 3600+ converter, Long-tubes, y-pipe, cat-back, and of course cam. And thats about it. Is the Z06 cam a good choice?

If it were me, i think i would want to go a little bigger than a z06 cam. Since you are planning do go with a 3600+ stall in the future and a 3.73 rear, you could get away with a good sized cam. It just depends on what you plan to do with the car.

No, the Z06 cam is NOT worth the money for the small gains you will recieve. You really need to come up with a goal for what you want out of a cam, power wise, and decide. There are plenty of cams that can be driven daily with no problems and give great gains across the graph.

If your lookin for a "small" cam, there are a few options. I went with the CheaTR (specs in sig.) over an LS6 cam, and have been very happy with it. It doesnt "need" a tune, works well with the stock manifolds, but after about two years, I'm having the car tuned anyway.

Get something small like a GT2-3 So that you can drive on stock converter for a while. When my car was lid and gear only I could keep up with a Camaro who's only mod was a LS6 cam.

Oh thats right, I forgot that most cams on A4 cars need a stall of some sort. That makes it a little trickier choice for you. Do all your other bolt-ons first so that you'll see the most out of your cam right away. (I'm doing it a little backwards, cam is installed, LTs are sittin in the garage)

Most will tell you it isn't worth it.. but if the combo is right it works pretty well..

See sig... (thats 11.6x @ 118 at full weight corrected for comparison)

The Cheater cam does well, but you'll be changing valve springs more often than the LS6 or some of the smaller cams (218/220, 220/220, GT2-3..etc)

I've got a hotcam, and i will tell you not to go that route just because its a pain to tune. I say go with a proven hero, the ol 224. TSP or thunder can hook you up there. Look at the 224R. They make good power and make a much better starter cam than the hot cam. I went with a hotcam b/c I was doing fresh-up stuff anyway (pushrods, oil pump, timing chain, LS6 valve springs) and someone gave it to me for $120. But, for under $600 TSP will hook you up with about any cam package you want with 918 springs, and hardened pushrods.

As far as changing the springs goes, dont worry about it. Its perhaps one of the easiest things that I have done. Just takes time. Tims spring tool here on LS1tech can be had for $30 and will do the trick perfectly.

A lot of people run a 224/224 cam only setup here and love it. But honestly, almost any cam you pick can work with your goal as long as you have a kick *** tune to go with it. People daily drive Trex's and MS3 cams all the time, but it aint with a stock tune. Find a dyno that frequents the hood latch of an LS1 and knows how to tune them (like a sponsor) and follow their recomendations as to supporting mods with a cam that you want and you will be happy. Just figure out what kind of RPM range it will see and what kind of power you want and they can help you out.
If you can, try to find another cammed LS1 and ride in it, then make your comparisons to your own goal. A "good daily driver" is a matter of opinion. I think mine drives just fine with 3.42 gears and a healthy interior rattling idle. To someone else my car is far from a daily driver.

I say go with the ASA cam alot of guys like this one! Dont be fooled the hotcam is a baby cam but packsa a nice punch(stealthy) Just because they have huge lifts and durations doesn't mean its gonna be best one. You gotta compliment your mods!

2001 LS6 cam
207/217 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
116 LSA

2002+ LS6 cam
204/218 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.551" / 0.547" int/exh lift
117 LSA

GMPP Hot Cam
218/227 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
112 LSA

GMPP ASA Cam
226/236 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
110 LSA

I'm putting an 04 LS6 in my 98 A4 for a couple of reasons. 1st, it works well. Not the most power, but a good small cam. 2nd, I didn't want to put a stall in. 3rd, I'm doing it due to budget. I promised myself I'd only spend a certain amount on this car and the LS6 cam fits that. I found a 04 LS6 cam with 3k miles, LS6 springs, pushrods and timing chain for a total of $149.00 shipped. I'm trying to find low mileage lifters, rockers and an LS6 oil pump to freshen up things while I'm in there. Planning on a mild port and polish job while the heads are off.
Plus, my goal for the car is only 350rwhp. Just a good daily.

Thanks everybody for there help, you have just given me most of the info I need. My main goal: I want to go low 12's, high 11's on motor, full weight on a drag radial.

Anyone know of proven Combo's to acomplish this? Cam, Lid, Exhaust, Converter, Gear? Also, I don't really want to speand way too much money, Kinda wanted to stay around the $2K or under. I just bought a house as well. Oh, and I had to just spend $130.00 in front speakers because my G/F had to keep turning the volume buttom up until she can hear the music. Unfortuneatly for me, it took the CD a few moments to kick on.

Thanks in advance

Somewhere I read of a guy with an A4, full bolt ons, and a hotcam that went 11.6. Tires and suspension had to have been in there too.
