i tried to replace the oring on the pickup tube where it mounts to the pump, but when i seperated the pump from the tube , there was no rubber oring? all there was was a metal looking kind of oring on the pickup tube. should i go ahead and put the rubber oring on or is there something else i should do?

TTT for ya , i am having the oring problem , after the motor is installed! , i think . symptoms are very normal O.P. until shes warm , then when its warm it can go down to about 10 psi @ a stop light then when moving normally , 20psi , and then as i get on it goes up slowly to a max of 40 psi, does this sound like it ? and how to fix it ? and how to avoid it if someone else does the work?
now do i hit continue ? or post ?

Re: oil pump pickup tube oring??
hey bdawg!
yeah i kinda had those problems.
when the car is warm the oil pressure starts dropping to 30~35 psi ( this is supposed to be a high volume oil pump)and when i floor it it picks up, but after i let off a WOT run , the valvetrain gets very loud ( like a colapsed lifter) then slowly quite down. when i check my oil i find lots of bubles on the dipstick too.
i'm replacing the oring because i read somewhere here that if the oil ring is cut or whatnot , you will end up sucking oil and foaming the oil and all that nasty stuff.

Replace the oring. I had to do it with my car after installing a new timing set. Sometimes the o-ring seats up in the pump, so if its not on the tube - look in the pump where the tube goes in.

Re: oil pump pickup tube oring??
Its the oring. When I replaced the timing chain on my car the oring stayed in the pump.Oil pressure was slow to respond and was low.At idle I had a couple of lifters bleed down.If you cant do the work have someone take the cover back off and replace the oring.A new one isnt expensive and you should be all set.

Where do you get a new O-ring from? Is this a GM dealer part, or can you just take your old one to a hardware store and buy a new one?

antta , i know it's the oring, the problem is i can't find the one that was supposed to be on my pick up tube .
you can get it from any gm dealership. i don't know about a hardware store??? those rings are in pretty harsh environment.

Re: oil pump pickup tube oring??
Did you have someone put the oil pump on for you or did u do the install yourself.
Also what kind of noise were you getting from a collasped lifter. I'm having the same symptoms as you with the bubbles in the oil and I am getting a loud tick and a metal to metal grind from the passenger side of my motor. I pulled the valve covers and everything looked good. I'm thinking worst case was i spun a main bearing but its hard to say until i take the heads off.

Re: oil pump pickup tube oring??
the niose i get is just the valve train getting real loud, like i had loose rockers or something.
it happens sometimes when i'm crusing on the highway and almose everytime i let off the gas after a WOT run.
i did install the oil pump myself.
did you check your pushrods?
also if you're taking the heads off look at the lifters, one of them might of rotated in it's seat and is grinding into the cam.

I am having the same problem. I replaced the o-ring and it went in easy. Why did this happen, and how can I prevent it from happening again?
I can't belive I've got to take the car apart again.

Re: oil pump pickup tube oring??
if you're going to put a new cam in it shouldn't be that hard, cause most of the work is getting the timing chain cover off ( you will have to remove it when putting in the new cam).
when you have the cover off the pump will be at the bottom and right under the pump you'll see the pickup tube. getting the bolt that holds the tube off is the tricky part , you'll have to be patient. good luck!
p.s. what cam are you getting?
