Default Can the 2001 LS6 cam compete with 2002 LS6 cam...

Here’s what we know about the LS6 cams for both 2001 and 2002:

2001 LS6 Cam: 204/211 .525/.525 Int CL:118, Exh CL:114 LSA:116 Cam Base Circle: 19.3mm

2002 LS6 Cam: 204/218 .551/.547 Int CL:120, Exh CL:115 LSA:117.5 Cam Base Circle: 19mm

Ok, those advertised lift numbers are the lobe lift multiplied by the rocker arm ratio. In this case, the rocker arm ratio is 1.7 which means the lobe lift is ~.309 (2001) and ~.324/.322 (2002).

We are all well aware of the performance the 2002 cam has over the 2001 cam in our cars. Well it stands to reason that a 2001 cam can produce similar performance when combined with 1.8 rockers. When combined with 1.8 rockers, the 2001 cam goes from a .525 lift to a .556 lift. The increase in the lift alone will help the cam tremendously and brings it closer to the performance of the 2002 cam.

Now is the question of duration. I also understand (and I may be wrong, so anyone with more information please state your case) that the higher ratio rocker will increase the duration. I am not sure on how to calculate how the duration will be affected. It seems to me that the increase in duration (while it will not match the exhaust duration of the 2002 cam) will also add to the effectiveness of the 2001 cam.

That leaves the LSA. I really don’t know if a 1.5 degree difference in a cam will make any noticeable change in performance.

My thoughts here are drive to those that may have the 2001 installed and are looking to upgrade to the 2002 or they may have one lying around and haven’t put it to use because they are looking to the newer cam.

Anyhow, the tread is now open for discussion.

I'm looking forward to the input!

1.8 ratio rockers will give you a little more duration, but the 2002 LS6 cam costs only $160. Seems like a no brainer vs. $600 rockers.

I agree with Terry. Just do the '02 cam. Not a bad idea though, just not cost effective.

I agree with those agreeing.

I like the 02 LS6 cam specs a lot.

Also keep in mind that your power band will be shifted up a bit with the LSA so I'd go with a 6500 rev limiter. Z06's have a 6400 redline I think.

Wow!!!

I didn't realize how expensive 1.8 rockers are!!

I guess it would be worth the effort of changing out the cam...man that sucks!
