can an engine be messed up but trying to start it?

can an engine be messed up but trying to start it? well my car ran out of gas a a body shop, they kept cranking and crankin gon it, they killed the pump, and now im wondering if they could have hurt the motor

well it was all most empty when i droped it off, and when they where pulling it in for teh weekend it stalled (out of gas) i think they kept tryin to crank on it and killed the pump (overheated it)

Tow that car to another shop for the work . . . I wouldn't trust a shop that did that to do ANYTHING to the car afterward.
