Yes this is normal. I used ARP hardened washers when I assemble strokers. It clears perfect. You also need to clay your oil pickup to make sure you have the proper clearance from the bottom of the oil pan.

I noticed when I was fiddling with the pulleys and belts that there was a scraping noise when I turned the crank over. I listened real carefully and thought it was just the new rings scraping on the freshly honed cylinders. I did notice that it had several catches per revolution. Then I decided to put a new oil pan on because of twisted off bolt on oil temp sensor and woops I dropped a bolt beside the oil deflector and it went tink tink tink deep into the motor. I tried a magnet first and then flipped over the motor and shook it to no avail. Off came the intake and valley cover-no bolt so I flipped it over and the bolt came out. When putting the deflector pan back on I noticed some metal shavings on 4 of the rod bolts and was confused until I looked at the inside of the deflector and saw the scrape marks. I beat the pan out a little where the marks were and put washers under the pan before bolting it up. I have good clearance on the pickup so now I am good to go.
I was really mad when the bolt dropped into the motor but as it turned out I think it was some higher power doing it to get me to see the problem. Maybe it was Bill W. 11+years now. Most of you might not get this.

i had to shim my defelector and i clayed the pickup tube as well......next just as important thing to check it the front connecting rod bolt to oil pan. my #1 rod bolt hit the pan as i luckally was turning it over on the stand. i about **** . i turned it one way then the next it made two little dimples in the pan. i took it and ground it out clayed it and had over .060 clearance so i called it good.
