Default '02 & Up Z-06 Cam Technical Discussion--Cam gurus

Well there is a lot of buzz about the '02 Z-06 cam ('02 LS-6 204/218 .551 .547 on 117.5) right now. It seems that + 30-35 RWHP is the norm for an LS-6 intake car with sock Manifolds adding this cam over stock (wow ). But there are a few questions that no one has seemed to really answer so far:

1. The base circle of the cam is smaller than the LS-1 base circle, and the valves (sodium filled) that are intened for use with this cam are longer.

-I think the base cirlcle is smaller by .03"-.04" (19mm VS 19.7mm)??? anyone know for sure?
-I think the sodium valves are .6mm longer than the stock LS-1 valves

Anyone know what the correct length pushrod is for this cam in a stock headed LS-1? I have heard the stock 7.4" pushrods work but increase valvetrain noise .

2. This cam is always packaged with the '02 & up Z-06 springs, and these springs are designed for use with this cam but with sodium filled valves (Lighter). Is this spring still going to be reliable up to 6400 RPM when used with a stock LS-1 head? Can anyone clear this up?

-GM Cam engineer Jim Hics says DO NOT use the '02 Z-06 cam & springs without the sodium filled valves because it will cause Valve Float.

Cam gurus help us out on this one, the cam is promising but still has some unresolved issues when used in LS-1 applications.

On a side note Comp makes an Xtreme RPM camshaft (212/218 .522/.529 on 114) that should make similar power with just a little bit lumpier idle. This cam would not have any base circle or valvespring issues in a stock head LS-1 car.

7.45 would be the correct size to use if you were **** I guess, as far as I am concerned there are no valvetrain issues here

Thats way too long. Since the base circle dia is .7mm less, you would need a PR thats .35mm longer, which is .014". No where near the .050" increase

1. Im using the stock ones no valvetrain noise at all. 7.45 would be the correct size to use if you were **** I guess, as far as I am concerned there are no valvetrain issues here
2. My A4 shifts at 6200, showed no sign of valve float on the dyno and it was pulled up to 6200

I wish I had a pic of my dyno graph on this cam because the HP curve was actually decent but because my tranny was slipping bad I had 46x ft/lb torque spike here and there that screwed the graph up.

Ill sell you mine
Hey Chikn, did yours peak at 6,000 RPM?

So what is the correct size pushrod for the stock ls1 heads? What lift are you getting with the stock pushrod? IS there any power to be had with the longer pushrods?

Well, if it were my car, I'd run 7.400" pushrods, which are .005" longer than stock. Lift doesnt change if you change the PR length. The hydraulic lifter soaks up the difference. Technically, if yyou run a PR thats too long, when the stock lifters pump up at high rpms, the valves will hang open and never close all of the way, costing HP
