Default Should a new Eagle crank have a key for the timing gear in it?

Got a new 4.00" Eagle crank in my new engine, and I went to put the timing gear/oil pump drive gear on it tonight, and I noticed there was no key in the slot! What to do?

Take it out and send it back! You need a keyway and a new key from GM.

Well... the shortblock is assembled... I would really rather just get a key and install it so I can get my cam in and set my timing...

Use the factory key from the dealership or the one from your stock crank. It doesn't fit perfectly, so you will need to shave a little from the sides with a die grinder. It just taps in after that.

I took the key out of my stock crank, and fit perfectly in my Eagle 4.10" and easy to do.

Jason

How do I get the one out of my stock crank? I tried for half an hour with pliers and a screwdriver, is there a trick to it? Is this something that should have been in when the rotating assembly was balanced?

If you can't get the stock one out, just go buy one from the dealership. It can't be more than a few bucks and you can slap it in. Follow Jason99's instructions. It's not a problem and not needed at balancing.
