Looks like every type of cover for this engine is 18 ft/lbs! Easy enough to remember

Default oil pan/ cover alighnment

It's been gone through before, but I'll go through it again. Since you have a M6, bolt your bell housing to the block. Place RTV on the 4 corners of the oil pan/gasket and set it in place. The remaining 2 bell housing bolts go through the housing and into the oil pan. Now that the pan is secured to the bell housing, it should be lined up. Place your oil pan bolts in along the sides and TQ to spec. Now you can remove all the bell housing bolts and the housing itself. Place the front and rear covers on and loosly insert all the bolts. Once in place, tighten the bolts that go through the pan into the bottom of the cover to spec. Your covers should now be alighned. Then tighten the perimeter bolts to spec. That should be about it.

Any way to do this without installing the bellhousing? This is a C5, if it matters, and the engine is on an engine stand, bolted to the back so that won't work.

Yep, you need Kent Moore/SPX J-41480 tool.

You don't 'need' a bellhousing, it makes it a lot easier though. The oil pan rear surface needs to be even with the rear face of the block, meaning that all 7-8 bellhousing bolts (oil pan mainly) are the same depth. A small straight-edge is enough when checked in the right places.

Makes sense, I can have a buddy hold 2 straightedges on while I bolt her down, the straightedge will act like the bellhousing. Thanks!

FWIW, I take mine off the stand to install the covers. Still won't help much since you don't have a bell housing. Straight edge should be fine.
