Default New engine - spun it over with the starter, no oil pressure

Before starting my new engine I wanted to prime it. I hooked everything up, pulled the fuel pump fuse, and cranked it over for 10-15 seconds. I did not have plugs or wires on it, I want it as free spinning as possible until I'm ready to fire it. So anyways, I cranked it for a few, and my oil pressure gauge did not move. Now what?

if my burned out memory is any use (?) I believe that you won't get a reading on the oil pressure gauge while the starter is cranking, it will stay zero. you have to quickly turn the key off and partially on to see the (falling) reading right after you crank her. I went thru the exact same thing with a new ls1 motor some years ago... hope I'm not totally wrong..

Hmmm.. I'm doing some research right now. I've got that sick feeling back in my stomach. I cycled it 3 times for 15 seconds each, and I made sure to fill the filter with oil before I put it on.

Why not just start her up for about 5 seconds or so to see if it has pressure? If it does, leave it running and if not, shut it off.

The STARTER on these cars does not turn the pump fast enuff. Your engine builder should have used assembly lube when the motor was built. Start the car up and oil pressure will build

I just said **** it and turned the key. ITS ALIVE!!! Runs great, I let it run for 15-20 minutes so all the fluids got up to operating temperature, varying the RPMS slowly from 1000 to 3000 rpm, but mostly in the 1500-2500 range. After it got close to temperature, it started smoking out the exhaust alot, I guess thats just all the **** burning off. There was some assembly lube on the valve stems I could see inside there, I'm sure that dripped down a bit and thats burning off. I was burning oil real bad on my old engine due to improperly installed valve stem seals, and I'm sure theres alot of stuff inside the headers that has to burn off too. I'm gonna let it cool down and change the oil. Then I have to put all the shrouds and airdams and crap back on, and I'm gonna take it on a spin around the block to see how it drives. I'm anxious to see how this new textralia is!

watch that coolant temp just to make sure all the air is out of the system.

Hey man I read your other post about today being the day this morning so I am glad to hear things went well. Like the other posts said just watch coolant and oil pressure religiously. If it ran for 15 to 20 minutes and did not get hot you probably did a good job of getting the air out. Congrats!

It heated up rather quickly but the temperature never went over 185, so I think I'm safe. Thanks for the help!

FYI - My engine builder told me to continue to crank the starter until the oil guage was reading pressure. It took a while but it does work.
