Default Have to rebuild, best options?

Ive got what appears to be a spun rod bearing. What is the opinion as the best way to go as far as fixing this? Its a daily driver 84k 2000 z28 a4. I would love to put a new cam in it while im at it, and add headers, and maybe an intake later on. What is my best option price wise? Id love a more durable engine, maybe forged pistons / stock rods or scat rods, obviously better bearings. Do I need to have a valve job done at 84k?> I want this to be a reliable engine and not be needing a rebuild for a while. I am in the memphis, TN area, and am toying with the idea of getting a salvage ls1 and throwing a cam in it, which would probably be a few thousand, so im trying to see how much I could rebuild mine for, and get another 80-90k miles out of. Any thoughts? Any idea of machining costs or other necessary evils? Thanks

honestly, it all depends on your budget constraints. If you are looking for a forged setup at a fair price, i believe you can get a nicely assembled short block 347 from TSP for something like 3k all said and done. They also offer some very nice cam setups, etc... Maybe you should look into them.

^^^ is that a sponsor?....

for the OP....a cheaper more power option you could go with is a 383 forged rotating kit, can get one from sponsor from anywhere between 2k-4k dollars...thats not bad in the scheme of things...

well i loved the stock power, wouldnt mind a bit more though. i want to do this as cheap as possible. Im trying to justify buying a 3k forged short block to go in a daily driver with ls1 heads and an a4 with a 10bolt. Anyone have any ideas on how much it costs to rebuild it? reusing crank and rods?? I want to be chep on this, because you spend 3k on a forge short block, then need a ls6 oil pump, new gaskets, head bolts, etc next thing you know you got 4-5k in a daily driver motor on a 7 year old car.

I'm also going to rebuild. Money will also be a big constraint for me. I've seen people rebuild what they have with better rods and pistons and bearings (and machine work, of course) for under $2k. That's what I'm doing.

sorry ls6s are not forged, didnt mean to say that. I dont know any reputable machine shops in the area im kind of leaning towards a remanufactured ls1. how can you rebuild one for under 2k?

Callies Compstar rods
Pistons (Mahle probably)
bearings
Machine work
Gaskets

Assemble yourself or with a friend who knows how. Easy enough!

I went ahead and got the TSP 347 Shortblock and haven't looked back. If you rebuild yours your going to have to buy new head bolts and gaskets and a new oil pump is always a good move while everything torn down. You could get the one like I bought with the -2cc pistons and you'll be able to shave your heads to 59ccs and with the right gasket run a 11.0 SCR and pick up some power. Also the TSP shortblock I got was a newer model LS1 like the put in the GTOs and it uses different lenght head bolts and there like a $100 compared to the ones you have that cost over $250. I sold my old shortblock to some friends for a later project. And the good thing is I do have a warranty if something goes to hell.
