Default Front seal

The seal that is behind the harmonic balancer is leaking. Do I have to pull the whole waterpump and timing cover off to change the seal or can I pull the pulley off and pull the seal out and put a new one in. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

well, you probably wont be able to remove the seal with it installed, but you could install the seal with the cover still on...

You do not have to pull the whole thing apart. Just remove belts and pulley/balancer and use seal puller from underneath car to pull seal out. Be carefull with the seal puller not to mark up the seal mounting surface. Install new seal with installer or deep socket which is close to same diameter as seal outer surface making sure you install it square and not crooked in the cover. I always put a light coat of grease or oil on lip seals before installing too. Then reinstall pulley and belts and run and recheck your work.

DO NOT USE GREASE OR OIL on LS1 main front or rear seals. You will ruin them. They are teflon type seals and do not require grease or oil!

So you are saying that if oil contacts the seal it will be ruined?? Last time I checked ... the seals job is to keep the oil inside the engine and I'm pretty sure that it is contacted by oil constantly when the engine is running. Please explain where you got this information from as I'm having a hard time trying to make sense of this!

I think he means for proper break in of the seal, it dosent require any special lube on it. I've heard this from other places as well.
